Pledge to Higher Quality, Lower Cost Health Care

Sponsored by: Consumers Union

Americans spend more on health care than people do elsewhere, but somehow we spend more for less.

Most of us have no clue about the actual cost of our medical care until the bills arrive, because hospitals and doctors don’t publish their charges. The cost of insurance goes up and up, with fewer services covered. Millions of Americans needlessly suffer or die from preventable medical errors and infections.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Costs can come down and quality can improve if we stop letting the insurance companies run the show, make billing clear and simple, and focus on prevention and managing chronic illness better.

You can make a difference by taking our pledge and joining our effort to make health care a top priority for our nation’s leaders, no matter who wins the election.

THE PLEDGE:
I want to join with other Americans to support action, answers and accountability. It is time to:
  • Give my family security that we will have quality care when we need it at a cost we can afford;
  • Make hospitals and doctors more transparent about the cost and quality of care they offer;
  • Elmininate unnecessary bureaucracy between patients and the care they need;
  • End long waits for care;
  • Examine all solutions that will ensure all Americans access to quality, affordable care, with input from real people like me.

i am a victim of this botched up system, suffering for 17 years with chronic pain from failed surgeries. now another health problem, potentially life threatening, has occured, and because of inept medicare/medicaid workers, my need for medical equipment is being denied, unless i agree to pay an exorbitant amount of $$, and monthly co-pay, which i can not afford. i can not get any other help with this, and have no family or friends to turn to for asssistance. shame on you, american voters, congress, and current administration for this hideous health care system we have in place now!

Insurance companies have destroyed the lives of many americans and have denied claims to people who desperately needed the money to survive and pay the ever rising medical costs they face. Congress should force these companies to pay !!!

As someone who has worked in health care, I am disgusted. The fact that insurance companies are for-profit organizations is disgusting. You pay for health insurance and then when you actually need it, the insurance company spends all of their energy trying to figure out ways to deny your claim. I am convinced that many insurance companies deny every claim the first time around hoping that the consumer will either not notice or be too tired or too sick to go through the harrowing process of getting a claim resubmitted. This country needs to get in line with every other developed country in the world and adopt a national health care program.

As a cervical cancer survivor and someone recently diagnosed with epilepsy, I have a lot of medical bills and doctor visits. It is a continual challenge to find quality doctors in the network accepted by by husband's insurance. IN order to stay with doctors I trust I am forced to pay out of pocket or hefty out of network costs. I avoid calling the insurance company that covers doctor visits because of the lethargic/ignorant/hostile customer service. There are few experiences of medical care that are positive for me. The insurance hassles alone are enough to make anyone crazy. Health care needs to change in this country!

I am losing my job and will not have health insurance for my daughter and I. I am in the process of trying to get insurance, but it is very expensive. If it was cheaper then I wouldn't have to worry about other bills I have to pay.

As a medical social worker, I have seen people become disabled. Obviously these people are at highest risk for further health problems that could be avoided by lower cost preventive measures. Yet, these vulnerable persons are left with a 2-year waiting period before they can get Medicare. Consequently, they are without any medical coverage as most will not qualify for Medicaid and must deplete their life savings for high medical bills.

I have spent time in Europe and experienced first-hand what an impact quality health-care has on the countries' people who can obtain necessary care and afford it. Learn by example and don't let the insurance companies dictate your procedures. Let everyone have access to life-saving medical care or we will have a worse standing than some third World countries. Swallow your pride and take a lesson from those who have achieved success.

I pray for the day my mother can choose her health and food in the same month. When will America begin to understand that the workforce of this country could be better warriors if they could afford to be heathy and strong. Imagine a poor family who has to tell their child they can not afford to let them life....!!!
