Thank State of Illinois for Preventing the Criminalization of Canines

Target: Jerry Mitchell, Representative; William Haine, Senator
Sponsored by: Care2
An innovative law that took effect January 1, 2007 will prevent dogs from being used as weapons.

Gang members, who are often legally prohibited from owning armed weapons, frequently use dogs as weapons to intimidate community members. This novel law was developed as a solution to protect the public from dangerous dogs, while also keeping the best interests of dogs at heart.

Public Act 94-0818 will make it a misdemeanor for a person convicted of a felony to own, possess, have custody of, or reside with an un-neutered dog older than 12 weeks of age, or any dog deemed "vicious" under the Illinois Animal Control Act.

"Dogs are wonderful companions and great protectors in many situations," stated State Representative Jerry Mitchell. "They were never meant to be used as a weapon to protect or defend illegal activities."

Please join the ASPCA in thanking Rep. Jerry Mitchell and Sen. William Haine for sponsoring this extremely important public and animal safety bill.

Dear Representative/Senator,

I applaud you for sponsoring Public Act 94-0818, an extremely important public and animal safety bill.

[your comment here]

Dogs are wonderful companions and great protectors in many situations, but they were never meant to be used as a weapon to protect or defend illegal activities.

This innovative act was designed to make our communities safer, and is a major step forward in correctly administering and regulating ‘dangerous dog’ laws. I commend you for this act of public service.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

dit is wrong to turn a animal that is intended to be a pet into a weapon and that is just what is happening here, turning the jaws of an animal into a weapon. This should be treated just like it was a gun being fired at another living being.

Thank you very much for this innovative law. I no longer reside in Chicago, Illinois, however, my daughter and granddaughters still reside in Illinois. From what I was seeing while living there, was that gangs are verywhere now. They are no longer an inner city problem only. I am also tired of hearing how the breed of the dog is the problem. Unless a dog is raised to be violent, they don't come by it naturally, they don't have the inclination to hurt anyone.Good job. I hope more states follow suit.
