Tell Wal-Mart to Stop Discriminating Against Women

Target: President & CEO Lee Scott
Sponsored by: Wal-Mart Watch
Wal-Mart currently faces the largest class-action sex discrimination lawsuit in American history.

Plaintiffs in the Dukes v. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. case have provided evidence that women working in Wal-Mart stores are paid less than their male counterparts for comparable work in every region of the country and in most job categories. WhatÂ’s worse, data show that the pay gap between men and women gets worse over time, and that women get promoted to management roles at Wal-Mart at a much slower rate than men.

As the worldÂ’s largest corporation and AmericaÂ’s largest private sector employer, Wal-Mart clearly has some explaining to do.

But rather than address the serious issues raised in the sex discrimination lawsuit, the company has aggressively fought the charges, even refusing to implement recommendations of its own diversity task force back in 1998. Tellingly, Wal-Mart disbanded the task force in 1999; and the percentage of women in management positions declined at the company in the two years that followed.

ItÂ’s time to demand that CEO Lee Scott take concrete and measurable steps to end the systematic discrimination against women at Wal-Mart Stores.

Dear Mr. Scott,

I am writing to express my concern over the allegations Wal-Mart faces in regards to its employment and hiring practices. As the largest corporation in the world and America’s largest private employer, you have the obligation to address the serious sex discrimination charges you face.

Evidence presented in the Dukes v Wal-Mart Stores Inc. case shows that women working in Wal-Mart stores are paid less than men doing comparable work in every region of the country and in most job categories. Specifically, female hourly employees in 2001 were paid $1,100 less on average than men doing similar work, while women in management positions had average pay that was $14,500 less than their male counterparts. Data also show that the pay gap between men and women working at Wal-Mart gets worse over time, and that women get promoted to management roles at the company at a much slower rate than men.

Your company’s own diversity task force made recommendations back in 1998 to implement a mentoring program for promising female and minority employees, but this recommendation was ignored until late 2003.

It’s time for Wal-Mart to start living up to its promise as a model employer for America. I urge you to take concrete and measurable steps to end systematic discrimination against women at Wal-Mart Stores.

Sincerely,
[your name]

Yo, walmart, you suk. Stop paying men more than women. And women, if this is happening to you, take some action. Sign petitions and start protests and boycotts. I know myself that I boycott Walmart. Women have equal rights...ok walmart? Get it through your head and stop being so prejudice.

First of all I don't like the fact that they use certain products that are made from animals.. NOW we got this problem to? Walmart seems to have MANY problems that consumers are tired of.

I find it repulsive that my own mother has told me of these rediculous accounts. Must someone always hold a corporations hand and make them see this is a democracy and not hypocracy. Hypothetical misapprehention is not an excuse for negligence. But what can you expect from a comany that thinks it's above the rest of the world. They must have forgotten what this country is all about. I am proud to say I have fought to protect our basic rights in this country. I have one thing to say to Walmart....GET OUT OF OUR COUNTRY !!!!!

Around 70% of this world's poor people are women; women give birth to children, raise the children, they take care of the home, cook, clean, many of them are the breadwinner for the family, and what do they get in return? Nothing. That's what they get in return: just a big, fat nothing! For all that the women have gone through, they should be wealthier than the ones who oppress them!

Women are often the sole support of children in our country and many live well below the poverty line. Please do not contribute to this national disaster.

I worked for Wal-Mart for 5 years. When I worked in a Department, my Dept Manager beat me black and blue with a cart UNDER a camera. Funny thing, when I turned it in to management, the tape had vanished. 3 days after my 36th Birthday when I was working a mandatory overnight shift, I was raped by a 19 year old manager who outweighed me by about 150 and was over a foot taller than me. He quit 3 days before management was able to do anything. I worked LOTS of overtime and was as my supervisors always said, "their best worker", but as far as paychecks, my check was considerably less. My supervisors said they tried to give me raises, but upper management always had caps on them. I saw the paperwork, I was up for 50 cents more every time. Why should my body parts be the determining factor to raises when clearly my work was better! When I left the company, due to injuries, I was denied STD because it was a "workers comp" but workers comp denied me, I was screwed out of my 401(k) and profit sharing that I always put money into every pay day, and what stock I had, they took over a share every year since I left. Finally this week after trying for 4 years to get them to correct my paperwork and my account I gave up and cashed it out, only to receive less than 2 shares worth of my money. Now I can't work with my back broken in 2 places and can't receive disability. I had my arm crushed in a metal door, so that limits things further. Everytime I was sent to the COMPANY Doctor for exrays etc I was told I was fine, go back to work. After the time limit was up, he'd look over the exrays again and THAT is how I found out my back was broken when the ladder fell on me! Nice life huh? Don't you wish YOU could live it instead of living in your fancy house and driving your fancy cars?? Why is it you can tell the Execs at Wal-Mart Home Office? Is it the fact that they have priviledged parking? Is it the fact that they are the ones driving the nice cars? Is it the fact that they are the most ruthless drivers in the parking lots? Hmmm....after working at the Home Office 2 years, I'd have to say, ALL OF THE ABOVE! You always know them in the halls at Wal-Mart Headquarters too, they are the ones NOT WEARING ANY CLOTHING WAL-MART SELLS!!!! I overheard someone ask a 'higher up' once about why they didn't buy and wear Wal-Marts clothing. You wouldn't want to know the answer! But....that clothing is good enough for the rest of us! And, on YOUR wages, the only thing we can afford! Why is it that your execs get 100,000 to way over a MILLION dollar bonuses EVERY YEAR but your employees get piddlings???? THEY are the reason you have all that 'extra' money! They are the ones busting their asses and taking crap from your store managers and district managers, but yet smiling and being helpful to the customers!! It's the WORKERS who NEED the money, NOT the execs, their pay scale is already OUTRAGEOUS!! Me, I'm glad to be gone!
