Tell Wal-Mart to Stop Discriminating Against Women

Target: President & CEO Lee Scott
Sponsored by: Wal-Mart Watch
Wal-Mart currently faces the largest class-action sex discrimination lawsuit in American history.

Plaintiffs in the Dukes v. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. case have provided evidence that women working in Wal-Mart stores are paid less than their male counterparts for comparable work in every region of the country and in most job categories. WhatÂ’s worse, data show that the pay gap between men and women gets worse over time, and that women get promoted to management roles at Wal-Mart at a much slower rate than men.

As the worldÂ’s largest corporation and AmericaÂ’s largest private sector employer, Wal-Mart clearly has some explaining to do.

But rather than address the serious issues raised in the sex discrimination lawsuit, the company has aggressively fought the charges, even refusing to implement recommendations of its own diversity task force back in 1998. Tellingly, Wal-Mart disbanded the task force in 1999; and the percentage of women in management positions declined at the company in the two years that followed.

ItÂ’s time to demand that CEO Lee Scott take concrete and measurable steps to end the systematic discrimination against women at Wal-Mart Stores.

Dear Mr. Scott,

I am writing to express my concern over the allegations Wal-Mart faces in regards to its employment and hiring practices. As the largest corporation in the world and America’s largest private employer, you have the obligation to address the serious sex discrimination charges you face.

Evidence presented in the Dukes v Wal-Mart Stores Inc. case shows that women working in Wal-Mart stores are paid less than men doing comparable work in every region of the country and in most job categories. Specifically, female hourly employees in 2001 were paid $1,100 less on average than men doing similar work, while women in management positions had average pay that was $14,500 less than their male counterparts. Data also show that the pay gap between men and women working at Wal-Mart gets worse over time, and that women get promoted to management roles at the company at a much slower rate than men.

Your company’s own diversity task force made recommendations back in 1998 to implement a mentoring program for promising female and minority employees, but this recommendation was ignored until late 2003.

It’s time for Wal-Mart to start living up to its promise as a model employer for America. I urge you to take concrete and measurable steps to end systematic discrimination against women at Wal-Mart Stores.

Sincerely,
[your name]

This is another stupid decision being made in your stores. What's next...requiring women to perform oral sex in order for them to move up the 'WalMart Corporate Ladder'?

I used to work for walmart a long time ago and it wasnt the way it is now it has changed so much even as a customer. Just last week I had a CSM male question my receipt where I had been over charged and he made a nother associate call and do a price check like he was to good to pick up the phone and do it. He acted like I was so wrong and then when he found out he was wrong he hesitated to even refund the over charge. Wal-mart is getting worse not better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your practices are already in the news and being publicized..I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want this discrimination case to be on the list too..

Hi, I worked for Wal-mart back in May of 2006....I then decided I wanted to try another job so, I took it. I was not happy with it. So, my boss, at Wal-mart, while I was shopping there...pretty much begged me to come back. Which I did. I got a call from them in November of 2006 for me to come and put my application back in. I thought, well, why not, since they said, they would do me good. Well, I went back then found out that I might be laid off....unknown to me. My manager, Ben Kincer, took me into the office and told me, we hired you seasonal and a lot of cashiers have quit so we decided to hire you on and keep you. (Wow! Like I won the lottery). Now, I go and ask for my three month raise after being there now, going on 3 months...this February 9th, 2007. My manager, always is on the run and never speaks to me anymore. So, I had to have Angie, tell me, that I will NOT be getting a raise from my $7.45...oh, by the way it did go up to $7.50. By the new wage hike. So, I will continue to make my $7.50 now, until this date of March 21st, 2007. They had me train a new guy, yesterday, his name is James, he is a cashier like me. He will be making $8.00 an hour. He doesn't seem to know a lot. He will need a lot of training. Not faulting him or anything...but, this is the way, Wal-mart operates I have learned to find this out. I am 46 years old and don't need to be treated this way. I am standing up for all the women. Thanks for listening, Very Truly Yours, Terri Coolidge store # 3502
