Ask President Bush to Commit to UN Development Goals

Target: President George W. Bush
Sponsored by: Oxfam America

It's rare that the nations of the world agree. But certain crises are so desperate and cause such human suffering that the global community can rise above all other conflicts and work together. Global poverty is a crisis that we truly have the ability to end.

Millennium Development Goals:
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8. Develop a Global Partnership for Development
All 191 member countries of the United Nations have pledged to meet a set of eight development goals, called the Millennium Development Goals, by the year 2015 - and we need your signature today to keep the world on track.

How can you help? Sign this petition - the ONE Declaration - and urge President Bush to pledge one percent of the U.S. federal budget to help the world achieve these far-reaching but critical development goals.

Here's what's at stake: Every week, 27,000 people die from lack of clean water; 60,000 people die from AIDS; and 204,000 children die from hunger, AIDS, and other preventable causes - that's one child every three seconds. More than 1.5 million Americans have already signed the ONE Declaration to make poverty history - please add your voice today!
deadline: 8-17-2006
goal: 20,000

Dear President Bush:

WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty.

WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget.

WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all.

Sincerely,

[your name]
We signed the “Ask President Bush to Commit to UN Development Goals” petition!
