Stop the Onslaught of Junk Mail

Target: US Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid; Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi
Sponsored by: Forest Ethics

Five years after the national Do Not Call Registry became the most popular consumer rights bill in history, citizens still face a different form of harassment: junk mail. Every year, Americans receive about 105 billion pieces of junk mail like credit card offers, coupons, and catalogs -- that's 848 pieces of junk mail per household. Even though 44% of that mail goes to the landfill unopened, we still spend eight months of our lives opening the rest.

Junk mail is more than just an annoyance; it's an environmental crisis. Every
year, junk mail production destroys 100 million trees, creating as much global warming pollution as 3.7 million cars.

We deserve the right to protect our privacy and our time. We deserve clean air and forest protection. We, the undersigned, support the creation of a national Do Not Mail Registry to provide a simple and comprehensive way for us to say no to junk mail.

Junk mail destroys our forests, natural resources and environment. It contributes to global warming and wastes our time and money. A Do Not Mail Registry would empower us to stop junk mail from invading our homes and mailboxes, and help protect our environment.

In 2003, Congress created the national Do Not Call Registrythe most popular consumer rights bill in history. Today, people are waiting for a companion registry that will end the onslaught of junk mail.

* Junk Mail Overflows Our Mailboxes - Every year American households receive a total of 104.7 billion pieces of junk mail or 848 pieces of junk mail per household, which requires 6.5 million tons of paper. Approximately 44% of junk mail goes to a landfill unopened, yet Americans still spend 8 months per lifetime opening junk mail.

It wastes resources important to us all. It is largely unwanted and ineffective. THe waste -- in resources, production, transport (both to the consumer and to the landfull) -- now far outweighs the value. GIVE US CONTROL OVER THE MAIL WE WISH TO RECEIVE AND OVER OUR OWN NATURAL RESOURCES!

Junk mail is an unnecessary and unwanted burden on me.Without exception, it goes directly from my mailbox to the recycler. I'm 80 years old, and old enough to know what interests me. Lugging boxes and bags of junk mail to the recycler does NOT interest me.

Who's reading that stuff anyway 3 times a week I receive ~1lbs of "trash" in my mailbox. This is an inexcusable way of wasting resources and polluting the environment : trees & energy & pollution to produce the paper energy + CO2 to transport it into my mailbox CO2 + energy to transport it away as trash it consumes lots of space in the landfills The ink ends up polluting water

Dear Elected Official or Decision maker, Junk mail destroys our forests, natural resources and environment. I also wish it to be understood by yourself, fellow voters of conscience, citizens of the world, and PMs, that as a voter I and others of my persuasion will continue to be vigilant on such issues. We will continue to be stalwart in our opposition to any similar legislation that would postpone current and prospective efforts at curbing greenhouse gas emissions, or protecting endangered species and their ecosystems. We are not in anyway 'anti-worker'. In many cases, we ourselves have lost jobs in industries that were targeted for pollution or cited for negative environmental impact upon endangered species etc. We realize that without clean air and water and an unmolested food chain from top to bottom, we ourselves have no more a guaranteed claim to life on earth than the lowliest insect which may render an entire ecosystem and all of it's species extinct due to pollutants. We also find it unconscionable that anyone should be so bold as to introduce legislation that not wish to emulate or would in any way seek to countermand progressive legislative efforts of states like California and Florida (among others). We believe these the lawmakers in these states should be applauded for their initial efforts at addressing this situation, for it and it's agents are legion, as well as Medusa like insofar as it has many heads and victims of it's poisonous bites are manifold. However, let it also be known and understood that as voters we are not naïve in our willingness to applaud such efforts. We are painfully aware of the fact that time is not on our side and fully realize that these are but the steps of an infant attempting to keep up with the pace of a giant. As a lawmaker, voter or decision maker you yourself must redouble your efforts to be someone who makes a difference, in either voting for or personally proposing and supporting much more aggressive bills to protect the global environment of the future today. Allow me to extend in advance my thanks, and the thanks of all those likeminded individuals and citizens of the world who share my views and are comrades in the effort to fight for a cleaner world for humans and all of the other animals and species that cannot fight for themselves. We recognize that although we are powerless alone, when united in our efforts at combating the challenges facing us as citizens of the world, we not only can but do have the power to change things for the better. Join us in our fight so that we can literally, help save the world! Your help, understanding and leadership on any and all such issues which may come before you as either a likeminded citizen of the world, a voter, or an elected representative is essential. If an elected official, you can be sure of either my vote, or the vote of those of my persuasion to whom you are direrctly answerable, and of our unmitigated support on every such matter. Regards, Mr. Kibbie

How many trees must we clear cut for unsolicited mail the majority of Americans just throw away? Trees remove the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which causes global warming. If that's the case, we need to plant more trees, not tear them down with unless junk mail. Junk mail is only helping to create an environmental crisis of unimagined proportions. Help to stem the tidal wave of unsolicited junk mail by passing a Bill which calls for a National "No Junk Mail" Registry Service. It will help selectively allow Americans to continue receiving "SOLICITED" mail while those who wish not to receive it may opt out. Stop giving in to the advertising lobbyists at the expense of our planet's precious environment. STOP THE JUNK MAIL NOW!!!

This is an option that must be made available. It's only commons sense, Congress. Plug your ears when business starts screaming. Tell them they're losing very little since their stuff ends in the trash anyway.

I have almost thrown away two important pieces of mail in the past 2 days because they had ended up in between the pages of junk mail fliers that filled my mailbox. And the cost to the environment is criminal. We cannot easily replace all the trees that are destroyed to produce the tons of paper that are simply thrown away each year because of indiscriminate mailing. Address lists should be subscription-based, like email lists.

If we are interested in finding products, we can easily access them on the internet. But when we do not want to receive junk mail, it is not a choice for us. IT ROBS US OF VALUABLE TIME DELETING EVERY DAY. THIS IS STEALING!!!!! STOP THE ROBBERY OF AMERICAN'S VALUABLE TIME, OUR MOST IMPORTANT RESOURCE. (I do not believe that it contributes to global warming, but I could not delete that from this form.)

Please help us stop the madness. I can't even manage the incoming mail anymore and most of it is just thrown away - a huge waste of resources. I know I am receiving far more than the 848 pieces of junk mail per year the statistics indicate - and I have taken the time to write to each of the solicitors. A "Do Not Mail Registry" is a great idea - please help us to make it a reality.

The junk mail we receive in our mailboxes everyday destroys our forests, natural resources and environment. We need to have a registry, like the Do Not Call Registry, that we can voluntarily subscribe to and save our forests. If we don't kill all our animals, we may have somewhere for them to live and something for them to eat!

Junk mail wastes resources like paper and energy in creating the junk. It wastes the time of federal employees in multiple areas of the post handling and it wastes the time of American citizens by having to deal with the junk mail when it arrives. The bulk of this mail goes unopened into our landfills, thereby wasting valuable real estate in our landfills and costing the governments more time and money in having to deal with recycling, sorting and disposing of this wasteful nuisance.
