Stop Polar Bear Trophy Hunting!

Target: Mr. Dale Hall, Director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Dr. Peter Thomas, Chief, Division of Management Authority
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife
Polar bears already face a daunting future because of global warming, oil and gas exploration and toxic chemical pollution. But there's another threat that many Americans aren't aware of – trophy hunting.

The United States does not allow sport hunting of polar bears in their Alaskan habitat. But more than half of the world's polar bears live in Canada, where hunting is legal. And due to a huge loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act, American trophy hunters can travel to Canada, kill a polar bear, and bring back polar bear trophies.

From 2002-2005, a total of 298 requests were made by US citizens to import sport hunted polar bear trophies from Canada. Of these, 252 - a staggering 85 percent - were issued.

We may not be able to stop Canada from allowing hunting, but we can stop the U.S. from allowing Americans to import polar bear trophies. Please act today and urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to stop issuing polar bear trophy permits immediately!

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and a citizen concerned about our declining polar bears, I urge you to cease issuing polar bear trophy permits immediately.

Polar bears already face a daunting future because of global warming, oil and gas exploration and toxic chemical pollution. But they also continue to face pressures from U.S. trophy hunters due to a loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).

Polar bear big game trophy hunting is outlawed in the U.S. But the MMPA loophole allows American trophy hunters to import polar bear body parts hunted in Canada.

Just last December the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service proposed that polar bears be listed as "Threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. Given this proposal, and the overwhelmingly positive response it has received from the American public, I find it disturbing that Fish and Wildlife continues to issue permits for American trophy hunters to import polar bear trophies from Canada. These permits effectively allow American citizens to participate in a commercial hunt of polar bears, something that is illegal in the polar bears' Alaskan habitat.

if the ice caps aren't melting and killing polar bears, there's always something else out to get them all the time. they are getting ready to go extinct because of all these idiots. pretty soon, the only time we'll be seeing polar bears is occasionally in a zoo out of state, since they will be so rare and hard to find, all so these hunters can have their "trophies". they need to take up baseball or something.

How could anyone condone the slaughter of these beautiful endangered bears. How could anyone slaughter one for no more than a trophy! These people are SICK and BARBARIC and any country that allows it to happen are just as bad as the killers themselves. STOP IT!!!

Polar Bears. They are already dying out because of the melting ice caps, so why make the process faster? Don't we want to be able to enjoy them without them being hung on walls? Polar Bears are my favorite animal, I really hope you stop doing this and just let them live their lives.

So … criminals often like to keep symbols from their victims … and some like to keep stuffed carcasses of an endangered species so they can say “… I killed one of the last ones!” Seems a bit primitive if not criminal. Doesn’t seem like a behavior to encourage. I’d say OK if a fair fight (e.g. stick the hunter in a cage with the bear with only a knife … now that’s something they could really be proud of).

It is simply disgusting truly reflective of one's character to get off on killing for sport. We should evaluate why it is that some people enjoy torturing and killing innocent animals... and get them the help that they need.

What the hell is wrong with you? You can't let this pass, polar bears are in enough trouble as it is with Global Warming, they don't need rich old farts hunting them down, too! And it's not like you NEED to hunt polar bears for a living, so stop, bakadomos! Next your going to say 'Oh, let's let people kill the snow leopards, too. We don't need them on our planet!' That's exactly where your wrong. God put those animals on our planet for a reason, you can't just take their lives away for 5 seconds of amusement, you sick people! You simply have to get rid of this law!!!!

I never understood this, it's murder to kill an innocent human being, but it's ok to kill a different innocent member of the animal kingdom. I would love to know who ever gave these people the right to decide what animals get to live and die? And don't give me any of the "animals are overpopulated" BS, humans are the most overpopulated species on this planet, but we're not allowed to hunt them, are we? These hunters who trophy hunt are nothing but bored rich people who are most likely trying to compensate for something (but isn't that what Viagra is for?). "Look at how tough I am, I can kill an animal from a great distance with a high-powered rifle." "I am the coolest man alive, this more than makes up for all my inadequateness!"
