In 2006, the worst has happened: South Dakota has banned abortion.
What did the law do? South Dakota's criminal ban outlawed abortion in almost all cases and does not protect a woman in cases of rape or incest or even when her health is in danger. Doctors who violate the ban could face up to five years in prison.
The law was part of a larger anti-choice strategy to overturn Roe v. Wade altogether. To quote the South Dakota House Speaker Matthew Michels, "I think the stars are aligned." [Los Angeles Times, 2/25/06]
Please join us in sending a message to U.S. governors asking them to hold the line on a woman's right to choose.
We signed the “It's Happened in South Dakota - Protect Choice in Your State Now!” petition!

Women must maintain the right to choose. It is her body and no one should have imput but her. And now there will be unsafe abortions - it will still happen, just in a dangerous way.

A woman's right to choose must be hers and hers alone!!!!! People who oppose abortion should be made to sign a contract requiring them to adopt the unwanted offspring of women whose right to choose they are taking away. That would make them think twice. I am certain that while they wish to tell others what to do, they would in no way want to adopt the unwanted children that are born into this world when you take the right to choose away. Who made these politicians GOD?????? If abortion is wrong then GOD (if he/she/it exits) will take care of those who have "sinned". This is madness. We are reverting to the dark ages!

This is a specific and direct challenge to Roe v. Wade. The anti-choice groups want us to take it to the Supreme Court so that the newly slanted court can strike down R v. W. I am very scared for the future of our country.

What HYPOCRITES these people are! George W. Bush paid for more than one woman HE impregnated to have an abortion BEFORE Roe v Wade became the law of the land. I remember the days of coat hangers and deaths from back-street abortions. Outlawing abortions will not stop them from happening -- it will only endanger the lives of the women who need them. The decision belongs to the woman alone -- not even a doctor should have any say! By the time a woman is pregnant, it is already too late for simple answers.

I strongly support the right for a woman to choose. We do not need a male dominated government and court to decide what women may do with their body. This law should be laid to rest and let women do as they will with their own body. We do not need more unwanted children in this world.

We must preserve our right to choose! Let's not go back to the dark ages where women have to put their lives at risk to get an abortion.

South Dakota just made it so that woman and doctors are going to be criminals. Just because it is now illigal doesn't mean it won't be done. Only now it will be in unsafe/unsterile situations the woman. Doctors will still perform them just in deserted buildings. Look at the history of before Roe V. Wade. Woman will start finding "home remedies" such as overdoses and hangers to handle the situation. Making abortions illigal does not stop them, it only makes an unwanted pregnancy a health hazard.

It is a woman's right to be able to choose what she does with her body! Yes the unborn child is important also but what good would it do if that child is brought up into a home where it is not going to be loved and cared for or even possibly abused?
