It's Happened in South Dakota - Protect Choice in Your State Now!

Target: Your State Governor
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
In 2006, the worst has happened: South Dakota has banned abortion.

What did the law do? South Dakota's criminal ban outlawed abortion in almost all cases and does not protect a woman in cases of rape or incest or even when her health is in danger. Doctors who violate the ban could face up to five years in prison.

The law was part of a larger anti-choice strategy to overturn Roe v. Wade altogether. To quote the South Dakota House Speaker Matthew Michels, "I think the stars are aligned." [Los Angeles Times, 2/25/06]

Please join us in sending a message to U.S. governors asking them to hold the line on a woman's right to choose.

Dear Governor,

A woman's right to choose is protected by the U.S. Supreme Court and should be a decision between a woman and her doctor - without interference from politicians.

Please protect the rights of women in our state by vetoing any anti-choice legislation that comes before you this legislative session.
We signed the “It's Happened in South Dakota - Protect Choice in Your State Now!” petition!

If you can't trust a woman with a choice, how can you trust her with a child!? The question is not whether abortion is moral or not but rather does the government have the right to take away your free choice and control your body? NO!

Women have finally been able to get some rights through much fighting for our status which isn't always in the home cooking, WE should have an opinion when someone has hurt our bodies by rape, or the baby she's carrying might mean death to the woman and she already has kids, In some cases abortion is the only answer for a woman and if it's outlawed, don't you think women will find other ways to abort the baby themselves or even worse, kill the baby after it's born... it's not right no matter which way you look at the situation, BUT A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY WHAT SHE WANTS DONE TO HER BODY AND THE LIFE DEVELOPING IN IT!!! NO MATTER WHAT SHE IS THE ONE WHO HAS TO LIVE WITH HER DECISION THE REST OF HER LIFE, NOT YOU THE LAW MAKER.

This is not acceptable, How could this happen? Who should say what one can do with their body? Where were the pro~lifers when this passed through?

Where are the minds of the pro-life people? I disagree with abortion, for myself. But I believe its also my right as a citizen of this country to make that choice. The moment we start dictation anything that another can do to/for themselves is a sad day indeed. Just as it is my given right to go jump off a cliff to my death if I choose, terminating a pregnancy, something that has a tremendous effect on a woman's body, is MY CHOICE. If we remove the option its not going to reduce unwanted pregnancies, it will leave a lot of unhappy women. How well do the pro-life people really think those women will take care of themselves and the fetus if they don't care about the pregnancy? Are they next going to mandate prenatal care? Who will pay for that if the women have no insurance. The anti-abortion movement needs to go do its homework and see the effects their plan will have on the health of women in this country.

it is the height of hypocrisy to attempt to control a woman's right to choose whether or not to carry a pregnancy, and also to cut finding to all social service programs, ie. welfare, adc, wic, foodstamps, medicaid... if the 'government' is going to intrude on women's rights, then it must provide all services necessary for those women and their children. it would appear that the "right to life's" goal is to provide more 'healthy, white, babies' available for adoption, by those who would like to pretend that babies are fashion accessories.

This is just another attempt to limits peoples rights. Please do NOT attempt to enact any laws similar to the state of South Dakota. They have turned back the clock and wiped out freedom of choice without regard to health issues or any other important issues such as rape.

This is just another way for women to be prevented from making choices..its pure audacity that the government should be the one to tell a woman what she can or cannot do with her body...especially in a case of rape...the women should be completely entitled to do as they please, for instance if a teenage girl is raped...she shouldnt have to be forced into keeping a baby, she probably wouldnt be able to sustain anyways, at such a young age, girls can barely take care of themselves, never the less of another life. The government has to separate itself from church, regardless if we're in a Christian country, religious beliefs shouldnt have to influence the government's restrictions. Also the government should stop trying to control the choices made by women.

This is completely unacceptable! One more step to keeping women barefoot and pregnant. South Dakota's Reservations have extreme poverty and high rape occurances. Your message is loud and clear - you don't care about the poor or the Native American and especially don't care about women.

The Supreme Court upheld a woman's right to choose. South Dakota shouldn't be allowed to overturn that.

Ok, now, the last thing we want to do is turn the country into a theocracy. The Woman must have a choice, it's her body, even when the baby is in the womb, it is still in her and considered her body. The baby doesn't become a seperate entity until birth. Now, I'm pro-choice and the woman's life comes before that of an unborn baby. It isn't immoral to save the life of a woman.

Women should own their own bodies and therefore have the right to choose.
