Save Whales From a Cruel End: Stop Whaling Now

Target: President Bush
Sponsored by: International Fund for Animal Welfare
Whales are still in danger. Since a global ban on whaling in 1985, Japan has continued to kill whales in the name of "scientific research." Yet legitimate scientists agree: there's no need to kill whales in order to study them when non-lethal methods already exist.

In fact, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) has clearly stated it does not need the data obtained from killing whales: passing resolutions critical of Japan's research whaling program forty-one times!

Yet Japanese whalers continue to kill whales in horribly cruel fashion, harpooning them with explosive tips and then dragging them onto whale ships. Japan actually sells the meat from this "research" to restaurants. And now Japan is increasing the slaughter: doubling the number of whales killed in an international marine mammal sanctuary.

Unless they are stopped now, Japan will launch a return to full-scale industrial whaling; the last of which once drove whales to the brink of extinction. Only the tremendous resources and clout of the United States has a chance to stop Japan from destroying the world's whales.

Please sign the petition asking President Bush to oppose Japan's bid for permanent membership into the United Nations Security Council until they comply with international laws protecting whales.

Dear Mr. President,

WHEREAS, the cruel killing of whales by Japan continues in the internationally protected waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary, despite official U.S. opposition and a global moratorium on whaling, and...

WHEREAS, Japan is using international aid to buy votes at the International Whaling Commission in order to legalize commercial whale hunting and sabotage the sanctity of an international decision-making body, and...

WHEREAS, Japan's claim of killing whales for "scientific research" is an obvious ruse. There is no need to harm whales in order to study them, as scientists on IFAW's own whale research vessel, Song of the Whale, repeatedly demonstrate. Japan's "scientific research" is a cover up to sell whale meat on the open market as part of a commercial whaling program, and...

WHEREAS, whales already face real and growing threats from global warming, ocean noise, entanglement in fishing gear and ship strikes,

I THEREFORE PETITION YOU to oppose Japan's bid for permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council until the nation complies with international laws for the protection of whales.

ACT NOW to stop Japanese whaling BEFORE Japan takes over the IWC and changes the rules of the game to legalize commercial whaling; dooming the world's whales to gradually disappear.

We need to stop whaling in Japan. Think of the animals we need to do something. Every living thing has feelings. Why should we butcher some more animal for meat. It's ridiculous. These mammals are related to us in some way and the killing should stop. Whales are the most beautiful creatures in the sea besides dolphins and they should have an equal chance to live and reproduce and just be themselves. It is ridiculous! I would NEVER eat a whale. By killing whales your ruining their population! It's going down and down each day and I honestly want the whales to be here when I'm older.

Whales are mammals who feel pain. They do not need to be "studied" or "eaten" in any restaurant ever!

I think these animals are more worth than political relationships with Japan. Bush is the only man with the power to end this cruel bloody nightmare. But he may hopes that if the japanese could kill whales, they would help America against North Korea... it is an illusion. But I am just a little man whose words are blown in the wind and no one would hear. In my personal view the best thing what someone can do is to ramm these whaling boats like a russian did.
