Keep Foster Children Off the Street

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Covenant House

One in five foster children grow up to be homeless adults. Many of these children are forced to leave their homes due to physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, but the state child welfare systems responsible for their well-being lack the tools needed to meet their complex needs.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act attempts to break the vicious cycle that disconnects these children from the help they need. The act supports these young people by: strengthening federal child welfare systems, extending their access to support services, and amending the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to improve access to benefits.

Every child deserves a chance to succeed no matter where they grow up or who raises them. Urge your senators to support S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

Dear Senator [Last Name]:

Right now, one-fifth of foster children grow up to be homeless adults.

Many of these children are compelled to leave home due to severe family conflict, parental mental illness, or physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Also, many of the young people who enter foster care age out at 18-years old with little or no support for their transition to the adult world. For youth struggling to responsibly care for children of their own, the challenges are even greater.

Clearly, the state child welfare systems responsible for the safety and protection of these young people often lack the tools to meet their complex needs, which is why I urge your support for the S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act gives more support to foster families, foster children, and young adults transitioning from the foster care system into adulthood by:

By being in the system myself as a child, I can tell you that lots of foster homes are not what they were supposed to be, loving and supportive, but mostly just a means to get money for most. Not all, but a high percentage, as I know many who have been in foster care. Give support and love so they can become valued citizens, and hopefully not make the mistakes alot of us have who were left to defend ourselves.

It's tough to be foster children and to feel disconnected and alone, so they really need people to stand up for them. Protect them, love them, give them stability... and watch the self-confidence and goodness that grow inside them.

These children have already lost out on home and family fronts and need opportunity and resource$ to survive... To become productive members of - rather than just another drain on - society.

Children are most precious above all else! They need love and affection to grow into good people who will strengthen our communities. We need to help each other. Families need to be strengthened above all else or our countries will fail. We are fools if we do not realize this.

One of my closest friends went through foster care. She seems to be doing alright (she's out now), but yeah. Foster homes... they're not always the best. These kids have gone through enough already..

This issue is beyond belief that we are having to even fight for the rights of children that have already been through so much trauma, in America. What has America Become?

These children may not have had as much, if any, foundation for becoming productive adults. It is difficult under the best of circumstances, so let's do all we can to increase their chances & opportunities, they deserve it and we need to develop a responsible generation to someday be our leaders.

I'm a fostercare worker in Australia and in working with foster children it is apparent that they require support on an ongoing basis, and especially when they leave care and need support to live independantly. Cutting support once they are adults is not good enough and they deserve better.

As an educator in the Bronx, NY for over 20 years, I have seen too many children harmed by the foster care system. You can help to change this--support S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.
