Keep Foster Children Off the Street
Target: U.S. SenateSponsored by: Covenant House
One in five foster children grow up to be homeless adults. Many of these children are forced to leave their homes due to physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, but the state child welfare systems responsible for their well-being lack the tools needed to meet their complex needs.
The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act attempts to break the vicious cycle that disconnects these children from the help they need. The act supports these young people by: strengthening federal child welfare systems, extending their access to support services, and amending the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to improve access to benefits.
Every child deserves a chance to succeed no matter where they grow up or who raises them. Urge your senators to support S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

these kids already have had a hrad life being in the system and bounced around, and when they become 18 they are left to fend for them selves with no family and we need to step up and help thses kids live productive secure lives!

My mother always says that college is cheaper than jail. It's true that helping children grow into healthy, well-adjusted adulthood will save the government money than dealing with unhealthy badly adjusted adults. I see it as a case of preventative medicine. Prevent social problems by nipping them (or in this case, taking care of them) in the bud.

I work with foster children and street children. Want to know the truth? In the U.S. I've worked with street kids as young as 9 yrs. old (they deal and sleep right on the streets). In Brazil, as young as age 4! People need to stop looking at China to adopt and start seeing the million children we have right here waiting for a home. Foster kids don't need perfect parents, they need parents.

Responsible and caring foster parents can help to undo some of the damage done by a childs past. Even those of us who don't foster can help in one way or another to show more foster children/orphans they can live a healthy prouctive life. |
