Keep Foster Children Off the Street

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Covenant House

One in five foster children grow up to be homeless adults. Many of these children are forced to leave their homes due to physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, but the state child welfare systems responsible for their well-being lack the tools needed to meet their complex needs.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act attempts to break the vicious cycle that disconnects these children from the help they need. The act supports these young people by: strengthening federal child welfare systems, extending their access to support services, and amending the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to improve access to benefits.

Every child deserves a chance to succeed no matter where they grow up or who raises them. Urge your senators to support S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

Dear Senator [Last Name]:

Right now, one-fifth of foster children grow up to be homeless adults.

Many of these children are compelled to leave home due to severe family conflict, parental mental illness, or physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Also, many of the young people who enter foster care age out at 18-years old with little or no support for their transition to the adult world. For youth struggling to responsibly care for children of their own, the challenges are even greater.

Clearly, the state child welfare systems responsible for the safety and protection of these young people often lack the tools to meet their complex needs, which is why I urge your support for the S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act gives more support to foster families, foster children, and young adults transitioning from the foster care system into adulthood by:

Foster children should not be turned out into society at 18. It’s awful! This is a great cause. We need to prevent homelessness before it starts. They need the same chance children with parents have! The majority grows up to face extreme poverty or homelessness. These children have been "Uprooted" sometimes many times. Children are the future; they can be working adults and helps our economy instead of living a terrible homeless life. Children are our future. The people who go through many struggles turn out to be stronger or smarter than most. These children have had a hard enough time in life, possibly being moved around from family to family, facility to facility. take GOOD care of children, they are our future!!

These children have had a hard enough time in life, possibly being moved around from family to family, facility to facility. They need to be given a chance to have a normal life.

Because the people who go through many struggles turn out to be stronger or smarter than most.Giving the minority of those people a chance that they most certainly deserve would most likely pay off.

These children have been "Uprooted" sometimes many times...are you going to let them become "Children Of the Streets"? This is in your hands to make a change right here...right now. Can you lay down at night and sleep knowing that you could have made a difference...and did'nt?

Because the majority grow up to face extreme poverty or homelessness. They need our help. State Depts of Children & Families are way too underfunded to give them a good education. Most haven't learned any skills to prepare them for the work place.

We need to prevent homelessness before it starts. Empowering these young people, protecting them from abusers, and giving them direction is a good way to start. Please, let's be proactive in our approach to this problem as a nation and not wait until it becomes an epidemic.

This is a great cause. I grew up as a child in foster care. Starting early. Being moved from home to home . Going back with family only to be put back in foster care again from home to home.Even one point. I was pregnant by a unwanted sexual encounter by step father. I was put into juvenile detention 6 months pregnant because at that time until they could find room had no where else to put me. You could imagine going throughs of sexual. mental abuse by the hands of those who were supposed to protect me. I could not understand why they would even put me in a detention center. I was 16 went through brutial rape carrying the child of that rape. I eventually had child and loved her no matter what. I then went through battle to keep her. My nother and her boyfriend who molested and raped me for years tried to take my child and because he was the biologiol father. I think children derserve much more. We need to be protected and I think the system fails us. I was in need and I felt I was let down..

Foster children should not be turned out into society at 18. They should stay in foster care until they are able to support themselves, even if it means until 25. The lack of transition services in this country is a profound shame. Shame on those who do not change it!
