Keep Foster Children Off the Street

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Covenant House

One in five foster children grow up to be homeless adults. Many of these children are forced to leave their homes due to physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, but the state child welfare systems responsible for their well-being lack the tools needed to meet their complex needs.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act attempts to break the vicious cycle that disconnects these children from the help they need. The act supports these young people by: strengthening federal child welfare systems, extending their access to support services, and amending the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to improve access to benefits.

Every child deserves a chance to succeed no matter where they grow up or who raises them. Urge your senators to support S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

Why is it important to help foster children transition to adulthood?
We respect your privacy. Your email address is used to confirm your signature and is NOT displayed publicly.
Dear Senator [Last Name]:

Right now, one-fifth of foster children grow up to be homeless adults.

Many of these children are compelled to leave home due to severe family conflict, parental mental illness, or physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Also, many of the young people who enter foster care age out at 18-years old with little or no support for their transition to the adult world. For youth struggling to responsibly care for children of their own, the challenges are even greater.

Clearly, the state child welfare systems responsible for the safety and protection of these young people often lack the tools to meet their complex needs, which is why I urge your support for the S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act gives more support to foster families, foster children, and young adults transitioning from the foster care system into adulthood by:

I hope you will also support access to free birth control for minors in the foster care system with children. Foster children with children of their own have even more difficulty transitioning to a normal adulthood.

Foster children have, in some cases, already risked all to be here alive today. Each of these children, and others who have found themselves in the foster care system deserve our best care, education, exposure to healthy communities, and a chance for a better future. Such experiences are of priceless value to us as individuals and to our society.

I believe all children deserve a chance in this world no matter where they come from I believe they need the help to give them that chance - but i also believe the family court system needs to change some laws , there wouldn't be so many kids in foster care if the judges would look at the whole picture not just one side- I have a grand daughter in the foster care system and I her grandmother can't visit or ever see her I would love to adopt her and raise her myself but the courts won't even look at me as being available to her which I think is wrong and my heart breaks every day when I pray that someday she will find me and her family love you Destiny

We should never turn our backs whether a person is 16, 18 or 20.

Most of them have been abused in some manner, and they need the support to get through this in order to have a healthy life.

I don't know of a single politician who hasn't spoken about how important our children are, that they are our future etc..Well, with the nightmare of a foster care system that we have, I say PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS! Story after story hits the news about horrific foster care abuse and we are all outraged about it yet the problem goes on and on with Minimal reform. Stop making impassioned speaches and DO SOMETHING about it! These kids deserve better.

It's important because it's the right thing to do. Our children are the future of our country --all children. We must help everyone we can.

Because they need to feel like someone cares & they are not being abandoned like they were in the first place by their parents for whatever reason. They want the basic need of love to be provided by someone who cares for them like their parents should have in the first place.

Right now foster care is a road to the military and homelessness. Why do pay to take children from their parents into a system that doesn't work?

Because it's less expensive, and better for the children to help them NOW! These kids are SO ABUSED! Sometimes by simple neglect, sometimes far, far worse! Have two boys now ... would do anything to help them into adulthood!
