Keep Foster Children Off the Street

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Covenant House

One in five foster children grow up to be homeless adults. Many of these children are forced to leave their homes due to physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, but the state child welfare systems responsible for their well-being lack the tools needed to meet their complex needs.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act attempts to break the vicious cycle that disconnects these children from the help they need. The act supports these young people by: strengthening federal child welfare systems, extending their access to support services, and amending the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to improve access to benefits.

Every child deserves a chance to succeed no matter where they grow up or who raises them. Urge your senators to support S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

Dear Senator [Last Name]:

Right now, one-fifth of foster children grow up to be homeless adults.

Many of these children are compelled to leave home due to severe family conflict, parental mental illness, or physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Also, many of the young people who enter foster care age out at 18-years old with little or no support for their transition to the adult world. For youth struggling to responsibly care for children of their own, the challenges are even greater.

Clearly, the state child welfare systems responsible for the safety and protection of these young people often lack the tools to meet their complex needs, which is why I urge your support for the S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act gives more support to foster families, foster children, and young adults transitioning from the foster care system into adulthood by:

The government wants to break up our families. The less we love each other the more the government wins. United we stand and so far divided we have fallen.

Children need love, shelter, food in their bellies and guidance to build a strong foundation so when they are adults out on their own, they are living, not surviving. No child should be outcasted like that!

Foster children need to have good lives just like the ones that other children have. They need love and respect. They need hope. I would like to help then transition into healthy progressive adults.

Children cannot enter the adult world on their own. That's why they have parents. When the parents aren't there they need the help of others or they will fall into desperate poverty and/or crime.

Take care of our children. Aren't we all God's chidren? Are we such a blind or indifferent society that we can't help those who need our understanding to eliminate this horrific epidemic?

Foster children need our help. What kind of society are we if we cannot take care of our own children!

These kids have already been let down by not having their parents parenting them. They deserve a break.

More and direct government aid is needed for foster families actually related to children taken from abusive, neglectful, severly mentally ill or grossly neglectful &/or addicted parent(s). This kind of aid is also needed to help the parent or parents needing physical or mental health treatment, or alcohol or drug rehab, or even just a good job & help to get out of their own poverty cycle. Many relatives would like to but cannot afford to take care of children needing to go into foster care. Additionally, foster children need a lot of supervision in foster families to be sure they aren't being abused or neglected there too. We need government intervention & money for education and training for social-workers, educators, mentors, therapists and for these persons to help these families and kids to grow into healthy adults and to keep them safe. This requires government funds. We need programs to give them education, advanced job training, and even on the job training that help them get jobs to give them hope for a fulfilling life and a true chance to get out of the poverty, drug or prison cycle. Shame on us as a society if we do not find solutions to these problems for thousands in our land of plenty. The wealthy people of the land must remember: to whom much is given, much is expected. The robber baron mentality has to go.

Navigating society is difficult as it is, without the added confusion of losing parents and feeling like an outsider. Foster children need huge amounts of support, lets fund that instead of the jails confused youths might end up in.
