URGENT: House to vote Thursday on 2007 Farm Bill - act now to support family farms!
Last Wednesday the House Agriculture Committee voted to increase subsidies that mega-farms use to drive family farms off the land and out of business. Not only does this action further subsidize the demise of family farms, it diverts scarce dollars from vital programs that could benefit all of America. This Thursday, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin will bring an amendment to the House floor during debate on the Farm Bill that will reverse this move.
The House Agriculture Committee's 2007 Farm Bill proposal is NOT reform. Representative Ryan's amendment is true reform. It would close the loopholes in farm programs that allow a few extremely wealthy individuals to receive multi-million dollar subsidy checks. Rep. Ryan's amendment would restore integrity to farm programs.
Urge your representative to vote FOR the Paul Ryan amendment that will reverse the payment limitation increase, close the loopholes, and limit farm subsidies to mega-farms. Tell your representative that supporting family farmers and rural America means supporting Rep. Ryan's amendment this Thursday.
We signed the “Support Family Farms, NOT Mega-Farms” petition!

I grew up in Minnesota and saw the farms change from family run farms planting/rotating a variety of crops using natural fertilizer to big fields with plants crowded so close together, it is a wonder any nutrition can develop. My understanding is that the natural fertilizer has been replaced with chemicals. The mega farmers are more interested in yield per acre rather than nutrition per acre. They make money now, but it ends up costing us all more in the long run because of poorer health.

Entrepreneurship and innovation are the foundation of success and well being because we can't rely on the trickle down suggested by Reaganomics. Huge power in the hands of few, should be addressed, which is the whole reason there are three branches of gov't in order to seperate powers. Furthermore, huge farms have the capacity to modernize and shouldn't require tax dollars that could be devoted to more important things such as scientific research, improvements in medicine, and ways to reduce gov't waste while continuing to emphasize national defense. Mega farms will be alright because people like eating in this country.

I come from a family with severla family farms and I have watched them be forced to build, get bigger, have more cows just to get by each year. Where 15-20 good milkers once were the bulk of their farm now 50 - 100 are the bare minimum to keep things going and this is as they get older and approach elderly. They have worked to keep the farm going to pass to their children but in doing so they are being forced into a early grave.

Family farms are what this country was built on and are still an important part of agriculture today. Family farms are more friendly and concentrate more on quality! Why does everything have to turn "corporate" in this Nation? I fear we are losing our identity...

Because it is proven and is common knowledge that family farms will protect animals better, the environment better and also consumers better as well. Please help and support them!

We need to support small farms rather than big business! It is very important for the economy to support the small farms and the integrity that they practice in their work. While big businesses will try to cut costs and violate basic health and safety codes, small farms will follow procedures because they depend more heavily on the income.

The Farm Bill is critical legislation that affects not only all rural Americans, but everyone living in our country. Family farms have been the backbone of our nation, and it is time we give our family farmers the support they deserve and need. Please stop subsidizing mega-farms and giving huge payouts to a wealthy few. Let's start using the Farm Bill to strengthen rural America, broaden conservation efforts, feed the hungry, and support our family farms.
