Support Family Farms, NOT Mega-Farms

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Center for Rural Affairs
URGENT: House to vote Thursday on 2007 Farm Bill - act now to support family farms!

Last Wednesday the House Agriculture Committee voted to increase subsidies that mega-farms use to drive family farms off the land and out of business. Not only does this action further subsidize the demise of family farms, it diverts scarce dollars from vital programs that could benefit all of America. This Thursday, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin will bring an amendment to the House floor during debate on the Farm Bill that will reverse this move.

The House Agriculture Committee's 2007 Farm Bill proposal is NOT reform. Representative Ryan's amendment is true reform. It would close the loopholes in farm programs that allow a few extremely wealthy individuals to receive multi-million dollar subsidy checks. Rep. Ryan's amendment would restore integrity to farm programs.

Urge your representative to vote FOR the Paul Ryan amendment that will reverse the payment limitation increase, close the loopholes, and limit farm subsidies to mega-farms. Tell your representative that supporting family farmers and rural America means supporting Rep. Ryan's amendment this Thursday.

Urge your representative to support real farm bill reform and an end to payments to mega-farms.
Dear [Your Congressman],

In the upcoming Farm Bill debate, I urge you to vote FOR the Ryan amendment to limit farm subsidies that mega-farms receive.

[Your Personal Message Here]

The Ryan amendment will reverse the payment limitation increase in the House Agriculture Committee's bill, close existing loopholes, and limit farm subsidies to mega-farms. Supporting family farmers in [our state] means supporting common sense Farm Bill reform. Limiting payments to mega-farms helps family farms by removing the unfair advantage unlimited subsidies provide to mega-farms. Rep. Ryan's amendment is bipartisan, common-sense reform and I urge you to vote FOR the Ryan amendment this coming Thursday.

Sincerely,

The love and care that the folks who live on family farms and grow OUR food is of so much more importance than mega farms that seem to have just one goal in mind and that is profits. The family farmer deserves our support but most of all they deserve our thanks. Please support our farming families.

farms go way back with our history and it's sad to see them come to an end due to them not having the support of your goverment. there is no help for them and they work 24/7 and have no health insurance, paid vacation, sick days. They work non-stop and get paid very little... and they are what america was built on...

I have a lot of friends who are small time farmers who are having a hard time cause they get less support from the goverment than the larger farms do

The U.S. has seen recent growth in sustainable farming practices, and I think we should do everything we can do continue spurring healthy agricultural practices based more on local, smaller-scale endeavors (even if it were to mean increases in food costs--healthy food and healthy land are worth it).

Thank you for supporting family farms. The biodiversity found as well as the importance of raising children that know how to care for the land and grow food is very important to a healthy sustainable future. Thank you again for doing everything you can to stop large scale farms that lack diversity, support GMO and toxic chemical applications that have negative environmental effects. Lets return to farming that will allow the land and the people to live for a long time.
