Support Family Farms, NOT Mega-Farms

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Center for Rural Affairs
URGENT: House to vote Thursday on 2007 Farm Bill - act now to support family farms!

Last Wednesday the House Agriculture Committee voted to increase subsidies that mega-farms use to drive family farms off the land and out of business. Not only does this action further subsidize the demise of family farms, it diverts scarce dollars from vital programs that could benefit all of America. This Thursday, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin will bring an amendment to the House floor during debate on the Farm Bill that will reverse this move.

The House Agriculture Committee's 2007 Farm Bill proposal is NOT reform. Representative Ryan's amendment is true reform. It would close the loopholes in farm programs that allow a few extremely wealthy individuals to receive multi-million dollar subsidy checks. Rep. Ryan's amendment would restore integrity to farm programs.

Urge your representative to vote FOR the Paul Ryan amendment that will reverse the payment limitation increase, close the loopholes, and limit farm subsidies to mega-farms. Tell your representative that supporting family farmers and rural America means supporting Rep. Ryan's amendment this Thursday.

Urge your representative to support real farm bill reform and an end to payments to mega-farms.
Dear [Your Congressman],

In the upcoming Farm Bill debate, I urge you to vote FOR the Ryan amendment to limit farm subsidies that mega-farms receive.

[Your Personal Message Here]

The Ryan amendment will reverse the payment limitation increase in the House Agriculture Committee's bill, close existing loopholes, and limit farm subsidies to mega-farms. Supporting family farmers in [our state] means supporting common sense Farm Bill reform. Limiting payments to mega-farms helps family farms by removing the unfair advantage unlimited subsidies provide to mega-farms. Rep. Ryan's amendment is bipartisan, common-sense reform and I urge you to vote FOR the Ryan amendment this coming Thursday.

Sincerely,

I live in Georgia, and have seen the "little guys"bullied out by big Corporations. It is not fair, and it is ruining peoples lives. When is anyone going to support family farmers? They too, it seems are being destroyed in the name of progress. The fruit and vegetables that we buy now in the stores have hardly any taste. They simply look good. The same product that is sold at a little farm stand is delicious, and has not been tampered with geneticly. It was done to the buffalo, now it is the small farmers turn next? Please help support the little guys.

Small local Farms are are better for the enviroment and should be encouraged. Buying locally grown foods decreases the amount of polutants in the enviroment as locally grown foods do not need to be transported long distances. Small family farms are ideal and in general can produce higher quality foods especially if grown organically.

My great-grandparents were family farmers, along with their son, and grandson.Family still farm some of the land that was owned by them. Family farmers care about their land, are more likely to use green methods of farming. They live on the land, and care about keeping it poison-free, and the crops they raise healthy, since they eat them too.

It is critical that we support small-scale agriculture in our country! They have been proven to provide more jobs for Americans, are more environmentally sustainable, AND they can be more productive than large-scale, corporate agriculture. Subsidize small-scale American farmers--not mega agro-corporations!

Small farms have been one of the backbones of American society. Small farms are better for the environment. Please remove subsidies for large farms and keep them and add protection for family farms.
