Stop China's Crackdown on Tibet

Target: The United Nations and Olympic Games Officials
Sponsored by: Care2
Violence against protesters, monks and civilians in Tibet is quickly escalating as the deadly crackdown continues.

Only a few months away from the Beijing Summer Olympics, the Chinese government's violent attacks have already caused the death of around 100 people, while hundreds continue to be shot at, beat up and detained by China's security forces.

The atrocities committed to control these protests are a reminder of China's record of human rights abuses. The protests won't undermine the Olympics in China, but the brutal repression and use of force against the people of Tibet will.

We need you to sign this petition to the Olympic Games Officials and the United Nations to make sure help is on the way for the people of Tibet.

Dear Human Rights Commissioner and Olympic Games Officials:

We are outraged by the abuse of power displayed by the Chinese government to suppress the protests in Tibet.

We demand that you urge China to end the crackdown immediately. The protesters grievances should not be addressed through the use of force but with an open and peaceful dialogue. Freedom of expression is a basic human right that should be respected and not punished with violence.

In addition, the UN should visit Tibet as soon as possible to carry out an investigation into the security forces' attacks and make the findings from that investigation public.

We can't remain silent while these abuses are taking place. We urge you to speak up and take urgent steps to end the crackdown and protect the people of Tibet.

I recently went on pilgrimage to Tibet and what i saw there was terrible and devastating. Lhasa, once 'the forbidden city' is now a mini Hong Kong, with tall concrete blocks and neon signs, the Potala Palace is wedged behind these buildings, where once it was viewable on its hill from the entire city. It has become a museum, rather than a spiritual place, with hundreds of Han Chinese pushing through, i barely had time to get a glance. The train that comes from Beijing brings 6,000 Chinese immigrants a day, who are swamping the Tibetan culture and taking all their jobs. We visited many monasteries, including Drepung and Sera, the two main monasteries involved in the protests, where the monks were being forced to learn propaganda and denounce the Dalai Lama. Drepung once housed 10,000 monks and now there are 400. It is the biggest monastery in Tibet. People who possess a photo of the Dalai Lama are arrested. Armed vehicles patrol the streets and we were spied on constantly (even waiters in restaurants took photos of us from beneath their aprons) this gave me a taste of the fear and oppression of such a lifestyle - no one should have to live like that! Amidst this, every now and then I would catch a glimpse ofthe real Tibet, the Tibet before Chinese regime, and it was beautiful. We spent a whole day on a non-existent road trying to get to a small village. When we arrived the whole village turned out to greet us. It was perched on the side of a mountain, overlooking the Himalayas. We walked up through the village until we came to the monastery, half of which lay in ruins because it had been bombed by the chinese. The monks gave us yak butter tea and we ate beneath a large canopy. Then we went and did a meditation practise in their Gompa. We started singing in english and then we sang in Tibetan. The old monk in the corner began to cry, many of the younger monks came in and just sat listening. To have people come from the other side of the world and practice their fading culture together gave them hope and support. When we came out we walked back down into the village where the villagers were all together singing as they pulled something up the hill. This was part of their culture, everything is done together, this was the real Tibet. As we drew closer i saw that they were pulling a metal pole, it was so out of place in that earthy village, i asked what it was for. The reply was "electricity." That was the saddest moment of the pilgrimage for me because I knew that this Tibetan village was losing everything that day to the chinese way of life. Free Tibet!

Remember that China is a two-faced Communist government. They lie, deceive, cheat, and bully the rest of the world with one face while they do whatever they want with the other. They do not care what the world thinks of them; they only pretend to be shocked and outraged by the actions of others. They will not leave Tibet willingly, they same way they will not allow Taiwan to be independent. Unfortunately they will have to be forced to leave Tibet.
