Support the PAW Act - End Alaska's Aerial Hunting Program!

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2.com

Alaska is truly our nation's last frontier. It is also the last place in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to chase and kill wolves. They shoot these animals from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank.

As recently as July, state wildlife agency personnel in Alaska staked out a known wolf denning site -- a practice that is illegal under Alaska law -- and, using helicopters, gunned down 14 adult wolves from the air. When they landed, they found the 14 helpless pups in the nearby dens -- just weeks old -- and methodically shot each one in the head. 28 wolves gunned down in all.

Congress passed a law thirty five years ago to put an end to aerial hunting. But Alaska is exploiting a loophole in federal law to resume the practice, not only for wolves, but bears as well. Hundreds of scientists have condemned what Alaska is doing, even as other states threaten to follow Alaska's lead. It's time to stop aerial hunting once and for all.

Rep. George Miller (CA) has introduced the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, legislation to close a federal loophole and curb Alaska's brutal aerial hunting program -- and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like the Greater Yellowstone region.

Please urge your Representative to sign on as a cosponsor to Rep. George Miller's PAW Act.

As one of your constituents, I am very concerned about the barbaric practice of "aerial hunting" in Alaska, in which state officials are allowing trophy hunters to use aircraft to run down and kill wolves.

I also understand that officials in Wyoming and Idaho are considering the use of aerial hunting of wolves by federal and state agencies.

That's why I'm asking you to sign on as a cosponsor to H.R. 3663, the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, introduced by Rep. George Miller. The PAW Act would end needless and cruel aerial hunting of wolves and other wildlife by closing a loophole in the Federal Airborne Hunting Act of 1972.

Killing of our wild animals in ANY FORM .. is an inhumane and cruel act. All of it should CEASE. I am fed up with the reasons and excuses of poachers and killers of our wild. It has taken more than enough of our animals into extinction and/or close to it. STOP IT NOW ... In the case of having to EAT is one thing , but ANYONE who is killing these animals is not doing so to EAT. They are doing it for fun and sport. IT IS HIGH TIME SOMETHING HAPPENED TO PUT A STOP TO THIS ABSURD , SICKENING AND HEARTBREAKING ACTION.

Another disgraceful act perpetuated on another mangificent animal. How much more depraved can man get just for the sake of 'fun'? Will people be next when they get tired of shooting animals or when we run out of them? It's just disgusting!

I find it incredible that this killing is allowed to occur and unbelievably authorized by officials whom one would expect to protect the local wildlife against man,s brutality towards an animal living in its own domain doing no harm to them.

How can you allow aerial hunting of wolves to continue? They are nature's way of keeping herds culled, they're here for a reason why would anyone want to kill one of these magnificent animals. Aerial hunting should be banned on all fronts.

Wolves live in families. When you pick one out from an airplane, you distupt the entire family unit. To me this shows such cowardess. When we begin to treat animals with some respect, we will treat people with respect. I can only hope. This is just an outward sign that shows how we are doing. This is just nonsensical !!!! What would Benton Frazier of the Royal Mounted Police do about these kinds of people! He would uphold the LAW, but he would work toward changing such a law.

Alaskans have twice voted to stop this policy, but the state government continues to allow wolves to be needlessly slaughtered from the skies. Nearly 700 wolves have been killed this way -- and another season has already begun. The PAW Act will put Alaska's savage policy to an end -- and prevent it from spreading to the Greater Yellowstone region. Please sign on to cosponsor this critical legislation today. Thank you for considering my comments. I look forward to hearing from you on this important matter. view less Sincerely, Suzanne Adelhouser
