Support the PAW Act - End Alaska's Aerial Hunting Program!

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2.com

Alaska is truly our nation's last frontier. It is also the last place in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to chase and kill wolves. They shoot these animals from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank.

As recently as July, state wildlife agency personnel in Alaska staked out a known wolf denning site -- a practice that is illegal under Alaska law -- and, using helicopters, gunned down 14 adult wolves from the air. When they landed, they found the 14 helpless pups in the nearby dens -- just weeks old -- and methodically shot each one in the head. 28 wolves gunned down in all.

Congress passed a law thirty five years ago to put an end to aerial hunting. But Alaska is exploiting a loophole in federal law to resume the practice, not only for wolves, but bears as well. Hundreds of scientists have condemned what Alaska is doing, even as other states threaten to follow Alaska's lead. It's time to stop aerial hunting once and for all.

Rep. George Miller (CA) has introduced the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, legislation to close a federal loophole and curb Alaska's brutal aerial hunting program -- and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like the Greater Yellowstone region.

Please urge your Representative to sign on as a cosponsor to Rep. George Miller's PAW Act.

As one of your constituents, I am very concerned about the barbaric practice of "aerial hunting" in Alaska, in which state officials are allowing trophy hunters to use aircraft to run down and kill wolves.

I also understand that officials in Wyoming and Idaho are considering the use of aerial hunting of wolves by federal and state agencies.

That's why I'm asking you to sign on as a cosponsor to H.R. 3663, the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, introduced by Rep. George Miller. The PAW Act would end needless and cruel aerial hunting of wolves and other wildlife by closing a loophole in the Federal Airborne Hunting Act of 1972.

I swear, if we took all the time we spent creating ways to destroy this planet and put it to good use, we'd a cured cancer by now. Sometimes I wonder if it doesn't have kill, fight, race, torment, or laugh at, some people would consider animals useless. We need a kind hearted Nation. Maybe if we start with the government!

Wolves are the most maligned animals there are. Careful research shows them to be so much less of a predator than represented. They are a part of our wldlife and need to be protected. Please do all you can to sponsor this.

hunting from a helicopter requires no skill. Wolves are not used for food. That makes hunting them a game with no challenge. This is a moral crime. Now we need to make it a legal crime as well.

Growing up with 3 avid hunter brothers, I do not condemn the sport in general as it served as a source of food for our family. However, this practice of hunting is a cruel and useless ego boost for trophy hunters. There are much more effective and humane ways to control populations. Please stop this practice. Our endangered species and land list grows longer everyday. We need to subtract, not add to it. Thank you.

When will we stop killing living creatures in the name of sport?! All animals are linked in the chain of life and wolves also serve a purpose which we don't have the right to deny them. Unlike human hunters who target healthy adult animals, wolves cull the sick and elderly from elk, deer, moose and bison herds, reducing the spread of disease and keeping the prey population as a whole healthier. Also, with wolves in the picture, the elk and moose must move around, allowing the compromised vegetation to flourish. The beneficial impacts of this change are numerous. The willow and aspen can now mature, creating habitat for migratory songbirds. The increased vegetation reduces erosion and cools the rivers and ponds, making them more hospitable for fish. Beavers are back building dams...killing wolves will affect the precarious balance of nature. Please stop the intentional destruction of our ecosystem in the name of human ego by saving the wolves!

Wow! Aren't you proud of yourself? That's really showing 'em.....what a big, brave hunter you are. Have someone fly you around while you carry a gun.....then you can shoot animals who couldn't possibly have a chance against you. It's such a good thing that we are the "more intelligent species". Can you imagine if we weren't?
