Stand Up for Iraqi Women

Target: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
Sponsored by: Womens Funding Network
UPDATE: The deadline for the new Iraqi constitution has been extended, and the role of religious law and women's rights remains controversial. Please sign and forward to your friends today!

Women in Iraq have more to fear these days than the horrors of war. As the August 15 deadline approaches for the completion of the new Iraqi constitution, women in Iraq fear that their hard-won rights could disappear.

Iraq's existing laws regarding women's rights are some of the most progressive in the Middle East, guaranteeing women the right to vote, attend school, run for political office, and own property. But Article 14 of the new draft constitution aims to replace these laws with Islamic Sharia law - which could dramatically affect women's rights in marriage, court, education and the political system. The draft constitution also does not guarantee Iraqi women a substantial representation in Parliament, as the current interim constitution does.

A renewed interpretation of Sharia law would turn back the clock on women's rights in Iraq. As the occupier of Iraq, the United States is obligated to uphold international law guaranteeing human rights for all Iraqi people, including the full range of rights for women.

Stand up for Iraqi women! Send a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today and urge her to advocate to protect the rights of women in Iraq by working with the Iraqi government to repeal Article 14 and guarantee women's rights under the law.

Dear Secretary Rice,

I am writing to express my deep concern for the rights of Iraqi women under Iraq's draft constitution. [Your personal comments] You recently said that you support women's rights, but that there's little you can do about it if the Iraqi people don't.

The reality is, Iraqi women rallied on the streets to get 25% representation in the legislature. They've held conferences on the constitution and advocated for specific language. In fact, the first post-war poll of Iraqi women release by Women for Women International showed that 94% of Iraqi women wanted to secure their rights.

I am gravely concerned about Article 14 and a renewed interpretation of Sharia law. Women could be denied the right to freedom of movement, education, property inheritance, and custody of their children. This Article is a threat to democracy and to the fundamental human rights of women.

[Your personal comments]

As the occupier of Iraq, the United States is obligated to uphold international law guaranteeing human rights for all Iraqi people, including the full range of rights for women. I urge you to condemn Article 14 and to work directly with Iraqi women and the Iraqi Governing Council to maintain the current guarantee of substantial representation in Parliament for women and to ensure that Iraqi women are guaranteed full rights under the law in the new constitution.

Thank you for your time,

Women in Iraq will lose rights they had under the previous government, it is sad to think that part of "bringing democracy" to a nation entails disenfranchising and threatening the safety of half of its population.

As a woman who has considerable power in the world, it is your responsibility to help other women who do not have a voice.

No matter what our religion or our beliefs, God created man and women equal. We are all God's children and should be treated as such. Women have fought throughout history for peace and justice. Women have been the nurturers and the first teachers of children. Iraq can have their religious beliefs, but women need to be allowed some freedoms and they have a lot to offer.

if women won't be voting there, then they certainly will be voting HERE. I, for one, will make sure my vote reflects how well this administration is treating civil rights for half the world's people.

Gee, how about this... IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

Condi, you are well aware of the incredible positive force women can have on communities and nations. Women hold up this world, and when they are oppressed, the nation they live in continues the negative spiral. If you want the nation-building process in Iraq to be successful, women must have equal rights and be protected under the new constitution.

The women of Iraq need YOU to make things happen for them. You are the most powerful woman in the world - if you want something to happen, you can make it happen. Flex your muscles and fight it out for the women of Iraq!

There is word that the new constitution being written by the Shiite-dominated National Assembly will call for a country ruled according to clerical law with drastically reduced rights for women. It may be the ultimate irony, that the US will play a decisive role in establishing a second Shiite Islamic state, in addition to Iran. Thank you President Bush.

How ironic. You and George W. Bush kept mouthing words that made us believe that we invaded Iraq because we wanted to bring Democracy to the Middle East. And now you have the nerve to say that there's nothing you can do to give the women of Iraq their freedom their "democracy"? Shame on you!

Condi, I think as a women you should be concerned about Iraqi women's rights. They should enjoy the same freedom we do here in America.

I think women should be a part of Iraq's Democracy. Without women Iraq may return to cruel and inhumane treatment for the people.

Iraqi women deserve to keep their hard earned rights. It is a very sad thing that under the rule of a tyrant dictator, these women had more rights than the new constitution for Iraq will give them. The United States is suppossed to advocate human rights for everyone around the world. Right now, it doesn't seem like they're doing a good job.

Women are human beings. We have a right to jobs, education, owning property. We are not objects to bought and sold, to be raped and humiliated. Every woman deserves to stand equal to men.

Besides having compassion for every woman in this world who doesn't have any rights, protection, civil liberties or respect, we should realize that it endangers the hard won freedom and civil liberties of every woman in the world. In this country, our government is undermining our progress on a daily basis and we may find ourselves not much better off than the women in Iraq.

Condoleeza Rice should do this country and the entire world a favor by stepping down from office and never opening her mouth again, except to confess all of the crimes she committed while in office.

I heard Secretary Rice dismiss the eroding of women's rights in Iraq on the Jim Lehrer News Hour. When asked about the fact that women had more rights under Sadam Hussein than they will likely have under a democratic regime, she brushed aside the question by saying that no one had rights in Iraq under Sadam Hussein. Her excuse for inaction is that no matter what happens, it will be better than before. While obviously life will be better for all with Hussein gone, Sharia law will oppress all women, not just certain 'enemies of the state' as under Hussein. We cannot dismiss the new constitution's threats to women's rights.

I hope that Secretary Rice is taking action behind the scenes to support women's rights groups in Iraq, insuring they have a seat at the table for drafting the constitution, and working to ensure that a sexist interpretation of Sharia law is not implemented.

Iraqi women, just like ALL women, deserve the same rights and freedoms men receive. There should be no difference in their treatment.

Iraqi women should be treated with human dignity as intelligent beings and NOT as sexual objects.

These Iraqi women came out in droves to prove that they wanted their voices heard! Let them have their rights, which under the draft of Iraq's constitution and the Sharia law will not give them!

Are you going to listen to what the Iraqi women are telling and showing or are you going to just ignore and be a 'yes' man for bush? Personally, I don't believe that you are the right person for the position that you are in! All I see is that you want the power and glory and only pretend to care about anyone but yourself and bushco!

Sharia law is designed to put women back into powerlessness and invisibility. It is among the worst systems used to enforce a total phallocentric reality on a population. All rights and access to education will be essententially eliminated for women and, for them, Iraq will become a prison without walls.

After having lived in Saudi Arabia myself and seeing first hand the treatment of women under the sharia law I feel strongly that you support and encourage those who will be governing Iraq to grant greater rights to women. I found that the Sharia itself can often ignore what the Koran says or twist it to suit their own zealous beliefs!

How would you like being a woman in Iraq? Do you think you would have been able to rise to the high position you currently occupy?
