Stop Puppy Mills in Pennsylvania

Target: Pennsylvania House of Representatives
Sponsored by: ASPCA

The poor treatment and abysmal conditions of dogs in Pennsylvania's puppy mills is already well documented, but a bill to amend the Pennsylvania Dog Law will soon be introduced in the state's House of Representatives.

Passage of this bill is vital if Pennsylvania is to improve conditions for dogs kept in commercial kennels and put an end to the state's reputation as the "puppy mill capital of the East." The bill would require:

  • Doubling the cage space.
  • Veterinarian visits at least once per year and with each pregnancy.
  • Access to outdoor exercise areas.
  • And many more provisions for the health and well-being of dogs.

Sign the petition and urge the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to reform the Dog Law. The dogs have suffered long enough!

deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 50,000

Great news! The bill to reform puppy mills in Pennsylvania was introduced as PA HB 2525.

Thank you for your support!
We are writing to urge you to support and cosponsor Representative Casorio's bill to amend the Dog Law. There are over 2100 commercial breeding kennels in Pennsylvania. This crucial legislation would ensure much needed changes to the current Pennsylvania laws regulating commercial dog breeding kennels. Further, it would give the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement the tools they need to effectively and consistently guarantee the humane treatment of dogs housed in Pennsylvania's commercial kennels.

Pennsylvania has developed a reputation as "the puppy mill capital of the East." The State's puppy mill industry garnered national attention recently, with some of its worst kennels being featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The high concentration of large-scale commercial dog breeding facilities, particularly in Lancaster County, has tarnished the State's reputation for decades. Additionally, it has caused countless hardships to both in-state and out-of-state dog owners who have purchased sick dogs bred in Pennsylvania's puppy mills. Representative Casorio's bill will help the State clean up its worst kennels and restore the State's image in the eyes of the entire nation.

This is something that crosses state lines. So many dogs are in need of good homes and it is such a tragedy that these mills turn out so many more. The practice is disgusting. I will no longer visit the state as I do not want to condone ignorance and tolerance of the mass killing and abuse of defenseless animals.

Why is it that people today only do things that benefit themselves? And all in the persuit of dirty, filthy money. There are also so many homeless dogs and puppies that may never find a home, because all of the dogs that are being bred and sold in their place. If there are already dogs, why make more.

Why is this happening? In a country like the United States this type of behavior should be nonexistent. Please help these dogs.

Dogs are beautiful, courageous and sentient beings that provide such love and loyalty and happiness to us. They deserve better. All animals do. Instead, consider finding a kinder way to make money and encourage adoption of homeless pets.

This is an animal's life you are taking into your hands. Think of a pet you or someone else owns, and how well they are treated. In puppy mills the animals are treated with no respect regarding the value of their experience and life. It is not our right to treat animals like property, and breed them as such.

Puppy mills are truly just mass animal cruelty. This is the one subject that can make me cry just from thinking about it. I believe that almost 100% of the public would back this bill if they were informed. Please represent our opinions!

We have got to stop puppy mills! Shut them down....They wont reform. To them the dogs are money, they care nothing about keeping them healthy or safe, when the dogs are done, have defects medical needs or conditions or too old they pawn them off to shelters or simply leave them to die its horrific! I could go on and on, its a nightmare. This law needs to be in place....PLEASE!

It is unfair to the puppies to do such a horrendous thing....knowing full well there are not enough people to provide the care. love and a good home that they deservedly need t o have. If no home is not found...WHAT do you do with them...do you LOVINGLY biring them into your home and raise them with your LOVING family??? OR are they starved, sickly and mistreated??? These animals look to US to take care of them, and love them...and one more thing... anyone who continually breed puppies for profit - it is apparent you have No feelings what-so-ever for these animals and sohould be closed down immediately...you don't have the right to be anywhere near these wonderful animals. SHAME ON YOU !!!!!

Though animals don't speak our language, it doesn't give us the right to take their lifes away. Let's have stricter laws so we don't encounter puppy mills. The creatures have a right to live.

This has to end for good. For decades, PA has been infamous all over the US for the puppy/kitty mills all over the state esp. Amish & SE PA areas

So many inbread diseases and illnesses could be avoided if the puppy mills were put out of business. I hope you will do your best to take care of this issue.

Imagine if you were one of those dogs, your first reaction is: where am I? What am I doing here? Why am I in this cage? Why dont I get to go out? Why does noone talk to me? Why did they take the one next to me? What is gas chamber? These are the things every dog in those damning places go through and MUCH worse. So youll understand why people are angry and upset. It shows we care. We FEEL for them. Knowing what will happen. If you want a reason why we want a reform, its because we care.
