Stop Puppy Mills in Pennsylvania

Target: Pennsylvania House of Representatives
Sponsored by: ASPCA

The poor treatment and abysmal conditions of dogs in Pennsylvania's puppy mills is already well documented, but a bill to amend the Pennsylvania Dog Law will soon be introduced in the state's House of Representatives.

Passage of this bill is vital if Pennsylvania is to improve conditions for dogs kept in commercial kennels and put an end to the state's reputation as the "puppy mill capital of the East." The bill would require:

  • Doubling the cage space.
  • Veterinarian visits at least once per year and with each pregnancy.
  • Access to outdoor exercise areas.
  • And many more provisions for the health and well-being of dogs.

Sign the petition and urge the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to reform the Dog Law. The dogs have suffered long enough!

deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 50,000

Great news! The bill to reform puppy mills in Pennsylvania was introduced as PA HB 2525.

Thank you for your support!
We are writing to urge you to support and cosponsor Representative Casorio's bill to amend the Dog Law. There are over 2100 commercial breeding kennels in Pennsylvania. This crucial legislation would ensure much needed changes to the current Pennsylvania laws regulating commercial dog breeding kennels. Further, it would give the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement the tools they need to effectively and consistently guarantee the humane treatment of dogs housed in Pennsylvania's commercial kennels.

Pennsylvania has developed a reputation as "the puppy mill capital of the East." The State's puppy mill industry garnered national attention recently, with some of its worst kennels being featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The high concentration of large-scale commercial dog breeding facilities, particularly in Lancaster County, has tarnished the State's reputation for decades. Additionally, it has caused countless hardships to both in-state and out-of-state dog owners who have purchased sick dogs bred in Pennsylvania's puppy mills. Representative Casorio's bill will help the State clean up its worst kennels and restore the State's image in the eyes of the entire nation.

I have personally seen the attrocities of the puppy mills. From the conditions they are kept, to the long term physical disabilities that many of these animals end up with due to careless breeding practices.

Is an explanation needed. It is our duty to protect animals, not use them for our personal gain.

Personally I believe there should be NO puppy mills let alone just reform their practices. There are TOO MANY unwanted pets now and I see NO NEED to add to the problem. PLEASE just put them out of business period!

Puppy mills keep animals in a cruel environment and often breed sick offspring. There is an overpopulation of unwanted pets in the United States already and puppy mills just add to the problem. There should only be a fixed number of registered breeders who are allowed to breed and sell animals in proper and safe conditions to avoid cruelty and overpopulation.

Puppy mills are an endless killing cycle. Breeding after breeding putting these dogs in pet shops and other horrible environments. Every dog that is bought from a store or other means gives another shelter pet a death sentence. Please help put an end to the mass production of puppies.

It is atrocious that today in the 21st century we still treat animals with the unenlightened passing of thought that was done in centuries past. Our belief in life as strictly human life is testament to our inability to evolve as a compassionate species. This must become a legal issue, and for those responsible and those who support, punishment must fall hard.

I recently watched an episode of Oprah that displayed the awful conditions of puppy mills. I did not realize the deplorable conditions these puppys are in. My family and I were sickend by watching what these animals must endure. These mills should not exist in our country and we must find a way to end the cruelty!

Every living thing deserves dignity and respect. These puppy mills are neglecting their duty to provide quality care for the animals they are sheparding.

This is cruel and unusual treatment and just a way for people that truly don't care about animals to make a fortune. Also we breed animal only to put millions of them down a year later because the owner decides it is to much work for them. We really need to evaluate what we are allowing people to do. Why allow people to bread animals only to put them to death. It doesn't make sense to me.

People need to be held responsible for their actions against animals. They are living, breathing, feeling creatures and need to be treated with respect.

Puppy mills are cruel. I rescued my last dog from a puppy mill. He was infected in his eyes, ears, feet, he had worms and was let to stand in his own feces. It took him a year to become a normal happy dog. Please help these innocent animals. Thanks you, Meg
