Protect Our Parks: Cosponsor the National Park Centennial Act

Target: U.S. Representatives
Sponsored by: National Parks Conservation Association
National parks around the country are struggling to protect the historic, cultural, and natural resources in their care. Deteriorating buildings, eroding archaeological sites, and increasing environmental degradation are all too common. The Park Service needs more funding to preserve our country's rich natural heritage. In addition, park staff struggle to fulfill the interpretive, educational, and safety needs of park visitors.

Fortunately, a bipartisan group of representatives led by Mark Souder (R-IN) and Brian Baird (D-WA) have just introduced the National Park Centennial Act. This bill, looking towards the 100th anniversary of the National Park System in 2016, would create the National Park Centennial Fund, a dedicated funding source that would help get national parks the funds they need to eliminate the maintenance backlog and support critical natural and cultural resource protection needs. The bill will better enable the National Park Service to protect the natural and cultural resources the parks were created to preserve.

Take action today! Sign this petition to send a letter to your representative and urge him or her to cosponsor the National Park Centennial Act. Urge your representative to call Reps. Mark Souder (R-IN) or Brian Baird (D-WA) and sign on as a cosponsor of the Centennial Act and to recruit their colleagues to do the same.

Please check to see if your representative is already a cosponsor, and if they are, you can thank them for their work to protect the parks in your personal comments.

Dear Representative,

As you know, our national parks desperately need the added protection that would come with sufficient funding. From historic buildings, including one of the nation's last 19th-century hospitals on Ellis Island, to ancient artifacts and fossils in Petrified Forest National Park, to the rare wildlife and plants found throughout the system, our national parks are in need of help. I have just learned about legislation that would provide that help, and I urge you to become a cosponsor of this important bill.

National Parks need our help: [Your personal comments]

The National Park Centennial Act, recently introduced by a bipartisan group of representatives, led by Mark Souder (R-IN) and Brian Baird (D-WA), would provide essential resources to the Park Service that would enable it to fulfill its mission to protect our nation's natural and cultural resources. The bill, looking to the 100th anniversary of the National Park System in 2016, would create the National Park Centennial Fund, a dedicated funding source that would help get national parks the funds they need to eliminate the maintenance backlog and support critical natural and cultural resource protection needs. Most important, it would return the luster to our national parks by the centennial of the National Park System in 2016.

I urge you to tell Representatives Souder and Baird that you want to help them pass this legislation to protect our nations natural heritage and cultural legacy. Please cosponsor this bill and encourage your colleagues to do the same in order to protect our country's most cherished places.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

How can we possibly even think of not increasing funding? Incredible!

In this day and age of shopping plazas, strip malls, frozen pizza and TV our National Parks bring us a world of natural beauty.

We need to take care of our Parks and the current budget doesn't allow for the needs of the parks right now.

I love the parks and visit every chance I get. I would hate to see them keep going down hill because of a lack of funding.

having visited a number of national parks and related sites, as well as talking to the staff a constain problem has been funding. not just for staff but for maintence. while congress currently allowing them to keep some of the fees generated , they, the fees, aren't anywhere near to what is needed. thats why I support the dedicated funds.

As billions of dollars are being spent overseas, we need to increase spending in this country to preserve our national heritage before it is too late.

The parks provide an oasis for escaping from the pressures, noise, aggravation of every-day life. Their preservation is imperative.

National Parks have been receiving less and less funding during the present administration. It is important to have quality parks and recreational areas.

National Parks are an important escape for me. When I visit the parks I forget whatever my worries or concerns were.

Our national parks are National Treasures. Since people from all over the world come to see them...they should be the best in the world, and that requires funding for upkeep and restoration, to hire rangers and biologists, and buy more land around them for buffer zones for native wildlife and plants, etc.

The soul of a nation is found in it's wild places.

Since the current administration in the White House seems intent as ever on turning back the clock on environmental protections. It's important that Congress take an immediate stand against the current administration's attempts to turn back the clock on these protection's!

Because of inflation and decreased funding over time, we are not protecting at the same level of service as we were when the parks were actually respected, not exploited by our president.

Beauty and symbolism of America in its finest form, celebrating some of our country's most unique features and landforms.

We have very few places left that are wild. We have very few animals left because we destroy or polute what little wild places we have left. I love for these places. It is where I find God. Our children need these places. If they are not taken care of, protected and managed properly none will be left. If any do survive they will be so poluted you won't want to go there. Enough have already been destroyed. Give them the funding and support they need. You work for me, for All OF US...this is what WE WANT.

Without our National Parks, there is no "America the Beautiful". Our natural beauty and resources helped build our country. Let us respect that by offering what protection we can and maintianing America's granduer.

The first National Park I ever visited was Glacier Ntl Park in Montana. The majesty of it took my breath away. I want my descendents to have that same magical feeling. Since then, I have visited many more of our National Parks. I do not want them to become crowded, dirty, and disrespected. The beauty of nature means everything to me. It sustains me, inspires me, and moves me to protect all that is wild and beautiful about the world. National Parks give me so much. I just would like to give a little back to them.

To protect our future, our past and our present for generations to come and that have gone! It is our history, our legacy! They need our countries help!

These parks are what I remember in my childhood as a place of peace, tranquility and unity. I still today go there in my mind and share those special memories with my family. And I would hope they will be able to do this with theirs!

It is important to continually support the national park system. Just because a park is established doesn't mean the work it done. Constant maintainence needs to be done to keep these parks in working order for the public.

The parks help to preserve the history and nature of our country for our future generations. People need these place of learning and relaxation to enrich their lives.
