Target:Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister, South Africa Ministry of Environmental Affairs & Tourism Sponsored by:Care2.com
South Africa has announced it will reverse its 1995 ban on killing elephants and resume culling of elephants in May. Elephant family groups could be rounded up by helicopters and shot from the air by marksmen.
Culling has been reinstated due to fears of elephant overpopulation in protected areas and the habitat destruction that too many elephants can cause. But this plan disregards the fact that elephants are extremely intelligent, social creatures with strong family bonds. It is well known that elephants mourn their dead, and killing large numbers of these sensitive creatures is cruel and unethical.
Please urge the South African government to continue exploring non-lethal options for dealing with growing elephant populations.
We signed the “Oppose South Africa's Plan to Kill Elephants” petition!

Do you understand that what you do to others will return and be done to you??? This is not a religious statement, it is a Universal spiritual Law...so you kill off amazing elephants and you think you won't pay the price in terms of what will happen to your human population? Don't you people have any gifted wise ones who can help you understand the destruction you are causing? STOP KILLING ELEPHANTS, STOP, STOP, STOP...ENOUGH. KEEP THE BAN IN PLACE, ASK OTHERS FOR HELP WITH SOLUTIONS IF YOU REALLY BELIEVE THEY ARE A PROBLEM...DO YOU KILL YOUR CHILDREN WHEN THEY CAUSE TROUBLE?

I urge the Minister to stand by his statement of 27th February regarding all possible alternative management options be used other than the killing of elephant. Removing permanent water sources, opening up trans-frontier boundaries, ensuring the Professional hunting groups do not use this opportunity to resume large scale elephant trophy hunts. I also congratulate the Minister on his stance for captive wild elephant management.

If people stopped encroaching on the natural habitat of the elephants, there would be no need for culling. By culling the gene pool of the elephants is being diminished - and who knows what impact this will have on the species in the long run! Relocate the elephants to alternate reserves; that is the sensible thing to do!

Please don't indiscriminately kill elephants. If culling is necessary then it should be done humanely and not with helicopters that frighten the entire herd

These are God's creatures, and they are part of the Earth's habitat and are intelligent and beautiful! Do not think of harming these animals in any inhumane way. Thank you for this consideration.

Do the right thing, and do not murder any elephants. Some humans need to give in life, and not take.

Elephants are known to mourn their dead and have such a complex social structure. It would be unethical to shoot these animals down from the air in order to control their population, I understand the difficult balance between protecting elephants and protecting their habitat when habitat is limited, but given how intelligent and emotionally developed elephants are, non-lethal means of population control must be explored further. Please reinstate the ban on culling.

if an animal hurts a human in the slightest way (in defence), they are killed straight away. then why is is okay for humans to kill animals, especially in such large numbers without going to jail. no human has the right to kill an animal
