South Africa has announced it will reverse its 1995 ban on killing elephants and resume culling of elephants in May. Elephant family groups could be rounded up by helicopters and shot from the air by marksmen.
Culling has been reinstated due to fears of elephant overpopulation in protected areas and the habitat destruction that too many elephants can cause. But this plan disregards the fact that elephants are extremely intelligent, social creatures with strong family bonds. It is well known that elephants mourn their dead, and killing large numbers of these sensitive creatures is cruel and unethical.
Please urge the South African government to continue exploring non-lethal options for dealing with growing elephant populations.
We signed the “Oppose South Africa's Plan to Kill Elephants” petition!

I am deeply saddened at the news that the South African government plans to reinstate elephant culls. Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals with strong family bonds, and killing of these magnificent animals will be devastating for the surviving individuals in these herds.
I urge your government to continue exploring all non-lethal means of population control and elephant management, including birth control habitat expansion through wildlife corridors and trans-boundary parks.
Thanks you for considering my comments.
Sincerely,
anonymous

What are we as a human race coming to!
We kill even when we have all this new technoligy and sience.
If we cant protect the life on earth, there is no hope for humanaity.
We are doomed if we dont work together to save Earth and all its wonderfull diversity of life.

Pls don’t kill them...they have the right to live like we do. Even our population is growing, nobody is killing us why kill them, make more space for them or send them to another protected park. These elephants are very important to us, we love to see them in the wild. Not getting killed . Pls don’t kill them.

You may as well kill a family of humans for the horror and destruction you will cause among the elephant's society. How terribly inconvenient it must be for your country to have to put up with these creatures.
Culling elephants is unforgiveable. They are a miracle of creation, as are all of God's creatures, and you must let nature take it's course.
Please find another way.

This is completely unethical and wrong. People need to stop reversing bans. Bans are set in place for good reason.

Perhaps the creation of more reserves would be a better solution that the wholesale slaughter of elephants. The influx of tourists to these reserves would be an economic benefit.

The elephants really help people in many ways.....they just want to live in this world. They have so many emotions that if you were paying attention you'd know they were crying inside. Don't destroy something that God intended to bring us joy.

It is terrible to try to wipe out such a magnificent species. They are losing their homes and have no where go, we should try to help save these great creatures, not try to destroy them.

Instead of killing the elephants why can't some form of birth control be administred in area where they are the most problematic or used like the tranquilizer darts? Why do we always have to kill instead of thinking of a remedy that could be used?

Your country's elephants are citizens of your country and deserve your care. They are a national treasure and unique part of your collective, LIVING heritage. If you kill them you encourage the rampant killing, both state-sanctioned and unauthorized, that threatens animals all over your continent. Please explore all non-lethal means of population control and elephant management, including birth control habitat expansion through wildlife corridors and trans-boundary parks as well as working with other nations and organizations that can protect these animals. South Africa can choose to be a positive model in wildlife management for the world - please make this choice.

I am horrified at the thought that South Africa will reverse it's 1995 ban on killing elephants. I am of the opinion that elephants need to be protected and harbored instead of culled and killed. Please research other non-lethal methods of population & habitat control, and help save South Africa's gentle giants.
