South Africa has announced it will reverse its 1995 ban on killing elephants and resume culling of elephants in May. Elephant family groups could be rounded up by helicopters and shot from the air by marksmen.
Culling has been reinstated due to fears of elephant overpopulation in protected areas and the habitat destruction that too many elephants can cause. But this plan disregards the fact that elephants are extremely intelligent, social creatures with strong family bonds. It is well known that elephants mourn their dead, and killing large numbers of these sensitive creatures is cruel and unethical.
Please urge the South African government to continue exploring non-lethal options for dealing with growing elephant populations.
We signed the “Oppose South Africa's Plan to Kill Elephants” petition!

Please do not allow the South African Elephant to be culled. I understand it takes alot of vegitation to feed the herds, but they have just as much right to be there as the people. I want many generations to be gifted to see these wonderful animals. Elephants have family groups just as we do, and they grieve for their loss just as we do. PLEASE don't let this happen.

i am against the killing of these south african elephants, because it is merely blood thirsty murdering. If the human population grows over than the preferred amount, will we simply kill off our own? Or will we let them live because we are "higher" than these elephants? AAll living things are equal because all life is valuble. If you choose to kill off these elephants because of population size i will not rest until the day humans are killed off because of population size.

There has to be a better, more ethical humane way to decrease the elephant population. PLEASE find a better way. Haven't we had too much killing in this world!

elephants are the most intelligent and sensitive natured land mammal displaying real concern for one another and display true breavement when one of their number is killed. No elephants should ever be killed by humans for any reason, nature will control their numbers. if I ever visited your country it would be to see these magnificent animals, protect them at all costs.

am deeply saddened at the news that the South African government plans to reinstate elephant culls. Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals with strong family bonds, and killing of these magnificent animals will be devastating for the surviving individuals in these herds.
I urge your government to continue exploring all non-lethal means of population control and elephant management, including birth control habitat expansion through wildlife corridors and trans-boundary parks.
Thanks you for considering my comments.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Walters

Please remember that the humans can not live separate from the animals. We are dependent on them. It is in our best interests to not reduce any wildlife population. They are at very low levels now. You risk a trophic cascade if this decimation of the elephant species continues.

I beleieve that the elephants have a right to live in their natural habitat. It is man who has come in and taken over the land. Set up a safari for them or ship them to places where they can roam free and procreate.

I am shocked at the news that South Africa plans to reinstate elephone culls. These huge animals are among the most sensitive, intelligent and caring animals in the world.
I urge the government's continued exploration of ALL non-lethal means to control elephant population growth and management, including birth control habitat expansion through wildlife corridors and trans-boundary parks.

There are obvious alternatives to killing so that these innocent creatures need not be harmed! Don't do it the lazy mans way - work together to find a better solution.

Elephants aren't in danger of overpopulating Africa. They were just an endangered species not even half of a decade ago. Thats disgusting to have to use such a pathetic excuse so that you guys can go on killing innocent animals.
