Don't Forget Hurricane Katrina and Rita Victims!

Target: 2008 Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: Oxfam America
Two years after the devastation brought on by Hurricane Katrina and Rita, the Gulf Coast is still hurting. Tens of thousands still live in temporary housing. Schools are closed. Businesses are struggling.

Continued neglect threatens to leave people poor and more at risk. With politicians are suffering from "Katrina amnesia," the current presidential candidates have a renewed chance to bring the Gulf Coast the help it needs.

Let's make sure the new leadership in the White House recognizes that, even though the issue isn't on the front pages anymore, the recovery is NOT over.

Rebuilding plans must be outlined  for  the southern states - before the next election.

Join us in asking the 2008 presidential candidates to issue their agenda outlining how, as president, they will recover the hurricane-devastated region!

deadline: 7-10-2008
goal: 18,000

The New Orleans and entire gulf coast area need help making it possible for people to return home. Two major obstacles to this goal are unaffordable (or unobtainable) home insurance and lack of job opportunities. We need subsidies or a new system for our insurance policies. We also need economic incentives to encourage new and established businesses to return to New Orleans. Educated ambitious residents simply can't return to the city without some hope of finding a suitable job. Businesses can't return to the city due to outrageous insurance rates (sound familiar?) and the lack of a suitable hiring base. We need to drive industry and commerce and attract back our educated community to get the economics of the city flowing again.

We are splending hundreds of millions of dollars a day on rebuilding efforts in another country. Shouldn't the needs of our own people come first? The Gulf Coast has been fogotton by America. The 2008 candidates must iniate an agenda that will help get these struggling people back up on their feet.

The first thing is to get an accounting of where all of the millions of dollars went that was donated for this area.

As a survivor of Katrina, help has declined tremendously. The air quality is still poor in New Orleans. Families are being diagnosed with diseases. The only hospital for the low income still hasn't opened yet. AMERICA, WE STILL NEED HELP!!!
