Save the Lives of Cats and Dogs: Support Non-Surgical Sterilization

Target: scientists; pharmaceutical companies; regulators and funders
Sponsored by: The Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs
Imagine being able to sterilize your dog or cat without surgery or anesthesia, but with a simple injection. While a sterilization injection is not available yet, it will be. WHEN is a matter of how much the public pressures pharmaceutical companies, scientists, regulators and funders into developing the right tools.

While many U.S. pet owners are able to afford and access spay/neuter surgery, it's often a different story for low-income pet owners and rural residents. Surgical sterilization is also logistically difficult and expensive for population control of un-owned animals, such as shelter animals and feral cats. An estimated five million cats and dogs die each year in US shelters alone.

The situation is even more desperate in many other countries where geographic, economic and cultural barriers prevent widespread use of sterilization to control dog and cat populations. Suffering is often greatest in these communities.

Much of this tragedy could be prevented by the development of new non-surgical tools which will facilitate population control as well as providing health and behavioral benefits to the animals receiving them. These tools will enable sterilization of those animals traditional sterilization has not reached.

Join the Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs (ACC&D), the ASPCA and Petfinder.com in endorsing this petition by declaring your support now! Your signatures and comments will be delivered to key targets to stimulate funding, research and development, approval and distribution of these life-saving tools.

Whereas:
  • Dog and cat overpopulation and homelessness are critical issues worldwide with approximately 5 million dogs and cats killed annually in US shelters alone.
  • In a recent survey of over 2,000 US pet owners, reducing the pet overpopulation problem was ranked as the most important issue.
  • Cat and dog overpopulation costs millions of dollars in public and private funds and poses public health risks.
  • Preventing cats and dogs from reproducing is widely accepted as the primary solution to pet overpopulation and homelessness.
  • Traditional sterilization (surgical spay/neuter) is difficult to access for many dog and cat owners, is prohibitively expensive and complicated for population control in many unowned animals, and is even considered inhumane in some countries.
  • Availability of appropriate nonsurgical sterilization methods, delivered as a simple injection, would dramatically increase access to sterilization for both owned and unowned cats and dogs.

We, the undersigned, support the rapid development of nonsurgical sterilization methods which meet or exceed regulatory requirements for safety and efficacy and which serve as effective tools for dog and cat population.
We signed the “Save the Lives of Cats and Dogs: Support Non-Surgical Sterilization” petition!

Dogs and Cats are going through horrible lives because some humans are not being responsable for them. They get loose and mate. With females a lot of times the owners find out she is pregnant because they did not take the time to spay her and they dump the dog because of it. Making her and her puppies add to the number of homeless and abandoned pets. Or they have a un-neutered male that is able to impregnant several females without them even knowing or caring. By making a non surgical sterilization people may be more willing to get their animals sterilized. It would be cheaper and easier for shelters to help control the population of the animals that come in and out of the shelter. Barn cats and feral cats population could be easily controlled, and more people would be willing to catch and give a wild or barn cat a shot instead of a surgery.

This is a very important procedure to be available for the public, so many dogs and cats in the streets and shelter and getting killed for no reason except the unresponseable care for them to have there animals sterilized.

Being a volunteer trying to place what becomes a miniscule number of animals in homes I am constantly heartbroken over the out of control animal population that winds up in our city pound and shelters. I am trying to help manage the effects of a problem but all our efforts are in vain unless we take action to attack the problem. This seems like a much needed step in the right direction.

Hard to understand why in this day and age we still have so many out there that just "don't get it!" This has to happen!!

We cannot adopt our way out of euthanaisia Spay and neuter is the only way

It seems to me that this procedure is long overdue. The fact that millions of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens are killed (not put to sleep) every year is something we all should be ashamed about. This is not their fault, it is all our fault, people do this. These cats and dogs are our responsibility. They are the innocent ones. We need to come to their aid. Stop treating them like objects and start treating them like living creatures who feel pain and loneliness and who do not want to die because there is no room for them anywhere. Look into their eyes.

My daughter has captured, neutered and released at least 13 cats in her neighborhood. Each time she has paid for her Vet to neuter them. It becomes more and more expensive each time. Surely an injection that could accomplish the same thing would not only be a blessing for the animals but for the rescuers as well.

Any means to provide a safe and happy life for these wonderful companions should be pursued.

I have been adopting shelter dogs for years -- as a matter of fact, only 1 of the 13 dogs and cats I have owned over the last 35 years was purchased from a purebred breeder. I have owned both purebreds and mutts, all from various shelters, rescue groups or humane societies. Several of my dogs came to me already spayed or neutered, but the vast majority did not and when a wrong married couple without much money, this was an extra expense we could ill afford. However, because of our commitment to stemming overpopulation, we sacrificed and ALWAYS had our pets neutered or spayed within the first month we owned them. How nice it would have been to have had a low-cost, non-surgical means to accomplish their sterilization. Please help others who cannot afford the cost of sterilization, but would still love to have an adopted pet, by increasing the research into non-surgical sterilzation. Let's set a goal to have this option available worldwide by 2010!

Our pets only enrich each and every one of our lives and it is far too important to be sure that we end their suffering. I adopted all three of my dogs and to think of so many others like them dying in shelters without proper love and life just breaks me, and it should impact all of us. Sterilization is a must to end all unnecessary animal suffering worldwide, and we need to start here in our country

If this will help prevent just one death it is already worth it.

The joy & companionship that I have received from my pets cannot be verbalized - all have been rescues. My recent was sent to the shelter because she "could not be managed" & could have been euthanized within days. I adopted her in September of 2003 - this past March she received her Therapy Dog Certification. How many others were not so lucky I can't say. How many others was there no room for & therefore never got the chance to be adopted ...we must control the overpopulation better

We are the voices for so many animals who don't have the ability to make these decisions for themselves. Lets be advocates to prevent suffering

There are far too many homeless animals running amok on the streets of every city unable to find adquate food. We need to help stop the proliferation of these animals so we can find adequate, caring homes and be certain these lovely creations of God are taken care of.

Being in rescue, I see SO many stray dogs, cats, kittens and puppies and so many of them suffer living on the streets. If there was a non-surgical option for sterlization, I know that more animals would be sterlized and more owners would be willing to take them in for a shot instead of surgery.

If we can avoid and stop putting down innocent animals for no fault of theirs then we must act now and work towards finding an appropriate method of neutering to avoid un necessary, mindless and ruthless killing of these poor creatures.

because to many people view their pets as {disposable} and turn them out to fend for themselves and if they aren't spayed/nuetered they will breed and make the problem worse.

Pet overpopulation is a serious problem in this country. Millions of unwanted animals end up euthanized in shelters or starving and sick in the streets because they are not sterilized. This is needed for their sake.

Animals are so loving and a lot of the time they just want to please us humans. They did not ask to be born, it happened. Why could we not use these animals as seeing eye dogs, theraphy and etc.

Pets are considered family members by most Americans. A method that can be used to sterilize pets in low income families and unowned cats easily and cheaply is desperately needed.

If sterilization,we wouldnt have homeless animals running varound making more unwanted animals Poor folks cant afford the HIGH cost of sterilizing their pets but still love them..Cost needs to come way down

Population control is so necessary to ensure that dogs and cats do not get put to sleep simply because there are so many that they cannot find a home. We need a less invasive, less expensive method to provide sterilization for pets that is available to every income level.
