Save the Lives of Cats and Dogs: Support Non-Surgical Sterilization

Imagine being able to sterilize your dog or cat without surgery or anesthesia, but with a simple injection. While a sterilization injection is not available yet, it will be. WHEN is a matter of how much the public pressures pharmaceutical companies, scientists, regulators and funders into developing the right tools.
While many U.S. pet owners are able to afford and access spay/neuter surgery, it's often a different story for low-income pet owners and rural residents. Surgical sterilization is also logistically difficult and expensive for population control of un-owned animals, such as shelter animals and feral cats. An estimated five million cats and dogs die each year in US shelters alone.
The situation is even more desperate in many other countries where geographic, economic and cultural barriers prevent widespread use of sterilization to control dog and cat populations. Suffering is often greatest in these communities.
Much of this tragedy could be prevented by the development of new non-surgical tools which will facilitate population control as well as providing health and behavioral benefits to the animals receiving them. These tools will enable sterilization of those animals traditional sterilization has not reached.

As a cat rescuer my heart breaks daily for all the kittens and adult cats that do not have people who care for them for their liftimes and the ones who aer not altered and add the overpopulation problem. In our local shelter over half of all the cats that end up there are killed! |

Too many are dying because there are not enough homes. Sterilization is time consuming and costly, but necessary because there is no alternative. Coming up with an alternative may save lives and money communities are spending euthanizing the surplus animals.

There are not enough homes for them all. Rural areas are especially notorious for dogs running loose and breeding indescriminately. Many men cannot bear the thought of castrating their animals (ignorance prevails), and a simple, injectible shot would be less expensive and more acceptable to most people who are against castration.

People can't or won't afford the traditional spay or nueter or are afraid of it. We adopted a dog from the pound and she was already pregnant and now we have 7 puppies to find homes for and we wish the new owners would sterilize them, but we have no control over it.

I am currently feeding about 20-24 feral and semi feral cats. I have had assistance and had about 12 of them surgically altered. There are several who have escaped traps several times. I am now at the point where I will need to attempt to trap several and take them to the animal shelter. I buy 80-100 lbs of cat food every month. I cannot afford to have any additional altered and people having begun dumping cats. This would be such a great way to stop overpopulation and senseless killing of unwanted animals. I also have two shelter dogs. Please make this happen soon!!!

I see the sad results of the lack of availability and affordability of spay/neuter surgery every time I volunteer at my local shelter. A quick, cheap and easy method of sterilization could help reduce the number of animals in shelters significantly, while not putting the animals at risk of complications from surgery or anesthetic. |

The companion animal overpopulation crisis in the United States especially needs certain attention. Nearly 4 million unwanted healthy cats and dogs are euthenized(killed) in U.S. animal shelters every year. There definetly need to be more sufficient laws in this country and around the world which would enforce humane spay/neuter.

Surgical methods of sterilization are costly and require equipment and skills that are not available in many, many parts of the world. Provision of non-surgical sterilization will have a significant impact in reducing the number of unwanted dogs and cats in the world in will prevent an enormous amount of suffering on the part of both animals and humans.

A number of organisations in Belgium try to thin population of stray cats by sterilisation. The surgery is quite invasive and the female cat needs to be monitored for several days. It is very expensive if you want it done right, some veterinarians don't do the procedure correctly, pieces of the ovaries aren't removed, the uterus isn't removed, so the cat still gets problems with hormones or cancers. If the would be a non invasive, effective, save and cheaper alternative for sterilisation our job would become a whole lot easier, and the cats would not have to suffer. |

Every day, in city after city, overpopulation leads to hundreds of cats and dogs needlessly being put to sleep. Finding a non-surgical method to prevent overpopulation is not only the humane thing to do, it is the ethically and morally right decision to keep from traumatizing those who give us nothing but their unconditional love and friendship.
