Stop the stealth attack on our National Parks!

Target: Gale Norton, Secretary of the Interior
Sponsored by: The Wilderness Society
The Bush administration has launched yet another stealth attack on America's most treasured wild places - our National Parks.

Their plan would dramatically reduce protections for our parks, which could lead to increased off-road vehicle use, additional commercialization, smog and other forms of degradation.

These changes could erode the look and feel of places like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon. We only have until February 18 to weigh in on this outrageous proposal.

Take action today by signing The Wilderness Society's petition to Interior Secretary Gale Norton. Be sure to include a personal statement about why our National Parks matter to you - your own thoughts will make your comment much stronger!

Dear Secretary Norton,

As a person who treasures and visits our national park system to enjoy its beauty and history, I am strongly opposed to the effort now underway to drastically change the policies that protect our national parks.

The Interior Department has offered no credible reason for the drastic revisions now under consideration and I believe that is because no practical need exists.

These sweeping changes will abandon the long-standing pledge of our government to its citizens that the units of our national park system will be managed in such a way as to preserve them unimpaired for future generations. In fact, that bedrock promise, from which all else ought to flow, is replaced with proposed revisions that will allow for development and commercialization.

Under these new policies, park managers are encouraged to allow activities that directly conflict with the mission and long time management of the park service.

I urge you to abandon this ill-advised proposal. We love our parks. And over the years we have been justifiably confident that our parks will endure, even as politics shift, even as administrations come and go. Please do not be the first Interior Secretary ever to betray that promise.

Sincerely,

I'd rather not live in a country that's all concrete and dug out. We need pristine wildlife for all living things including ourselves!

Our National Parks are our treasures. They ensure that tourists continue to visit the US from around the world and for Americans at home they provide a much needed break from the ever increasing spread of urban and suburban living. We need to keep them in their natural state!

Once sacred and precious land is desicrated by development, it is gone forever. There must be some standard of right and wrong, there must be some motivation to preserve this land forever, not just until it has a price tag on it. Short term thinking is dangerous, and truly do the benefits of developing and cutting in to these national parks really outweigh the detriments?

The National Parks were set aside to be preserved from the greed of developers who seek only their own wealth, and it is your sacred duty, Secretary Norton, to protect every inch of those preserves. It is your JOB to stand up to anyone who tries to rob these irreplaceable treasures for ANY reason - even if it IS our President committing the robbery!! The National Parks must not be violated, they must be protected FOREVER.

The National Parks should matter to every American as it belongs to them and not the politicians and big business who would see them go to ruin for the almighty dollar. Please don't let them, it is up to you to protect America's interests even it is from there own government which is so shameful. The parks were put there for the people of America to enjoy not for the President to share with his friends in big business.

The National Park Service, and all of the National Parks within that system were specifically set aside so that their beauty and magnificence might be enjoyed by future generations. Our land has some of the earth's most spectacular treasures, and it was given to us as a gift from our Creator. This gift has been treasured and held in such high value, that a governmental body was created to keep it safe from would-be thieves. For in the final analysis, whoever opens this land to developers and drilling, would in fact be robbing us all!

the National Parks are last remaining remnants of wildnerness that we have. Our ancestors felt that it was very important to preserve the wilderness for future generations, not only for the health and beauty of the land, but also to leave a rich heritage for future generations. Mountains, forests, and prairies are home to many creatures and plant life. We are not the only ones that live on this continent. It is rather arrogant of us to assume that all of the land belongs to us and it is here for us to use as we see fit. But if you insist on thinking that it is here just for us, then consider this: the trees of the forest provide oxygen and clean the air, the trees and the forest floor provide clean water. There is a very delicate ecosystem that provides food for all. So, if the forests are destroyed and sold for a quick cash, then we are robbing our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all future generations of AIR, WATER, and FOOD. We will be destroying the lives of countless creatures that depend on the forest for life. The logging companies have already taken over 95% of the original forests of this country. Do you really want them to be able to take the last 5% and leave no Old Growth left? Trees and ecosystems that have been here way before Man? I dont. They have taken more than their share and i refuse to let them have anymore.

They are a reminder of a better, gentler time. I've voted Republican, but will be voting for the Democrats from now on. Shame on you President Bush and Congress and Senators who let you do this!

Don't destroy America's natural beauty! Once it's gone it can never be brought back. I would like the younger generations to be able to enjoy America as it should be. Plus I have yet to see some of the great National Parks of America.
