Tell the Bush Administration: Birth Control Pills Are Not Abortion

Target: Michael Leavitt, Secretary
Sponsored by: Care2
Just when we think we've seen it all, the Bush Administration has drafted regulations that would undermine women's access to birth control.

Under the guise of clarifying existing federal laws that allow health professionals to refuse to provide abortion services, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has drafted regulations that redefine abortion to include commonly used, FDA-approved methods of contraception, such as birth control pills and IUDs.

This radical redefinition of abortion is at odds with science and the government's own definition -- that pregnancy begins with the implantation of a fertilized egg.

This is a shameful political ploy in the waning days of the Bush Administration, which could cause immeasurable harm to the 17 million women in need of publicly funded contraceptive services.

Please sign your letter to Secretary Michael Leavitt today, and urge him to abandon these radical, dangerous regulations.

Dear Secretary Leavitt,

I'm gravely concerned by the Department of Health and Human Services draft regulations that were leaked recently, which could severely limit a woman's access to basic health care needs.

I strongly urge you NOT to release the draft proposed regulations.

[Your Comments Will Be Added Here]

This proposal would create unnecessary obstacles for women seeking contraceptive services and most alarming the draft regulations confuse contraception with abortion by redefining abortion to include commonly used FDA-approved methods of contraception, such as oral contraceptives and IUDs.

This is ridiculous. Stay out of my body, Bush admin. Get rid of the need for abortions and there won't be any! Spend some of that "war money" on the people in your country that you claim to care about.

All people should have control over what happens with their own bodies. Let adults make adult decisions about their health and lives.

Why would you do this? If anything, I would think you would support birth control because it prevents abortions by preventing pregnancy all together. You can't kill something that hasn't been created yet.

Stop trying to force your rules on the bodies of others that are trying to make responsible choices in their lives. It is not your decision to make for the rest of the population.

Because this is a decision each female needs to make. This is NOT a decision someone else needs to make for me or any other female.

Birth control is nothing more than a way to be responsible about family planning, and avoiding any mistakes that people are not prepared for or want at that time! We as women have a right to say when we get pregnant. My husband and I are NOT ready to have children, so I take birth control to avoid getting pregnant right now. Do NOT take that option away from us! No one should tell us what to do with our bodies or when we should have children etc.

If the government starts telling citizens, which I assume the most impacted will ber the poor, they can not have this popular form of birth control, then obviously the birth rate will skyrocket. Who will adopt these unwanted children? Who will pay for the OBGYN care of these mothers?

Abortion or not abortion, women should have control over their bodies and the right to chose... Nothing comes out of a man's body except sperm, so men are only accessory...Get it.
