Save Chimpanzees from the Bushmeat Trade!

Target: Congress
Sponsored by: The Jane Goodall Institute
Chimpanzees are our closest human relatives – they have family bonds, make and use tools and show signs of language – and yet, humans are wiping them out.

Wild chimpanzee populations have plummeted in the last 20 to 30 years, and face more threats ahead. The bushmeat trade (the unsustainable hunting of wildlife) is a root issue endangering chimpanzees. To make this practice even worse, orphaned chimpanzee babies are typically sold in local markets and often end up in the pet trade after watching their mothers being brutally killed.

Hunters remove more than 1 million metric tons of bushmeat from the Congo Basin forests each year. In only one year, 15,000 carcasses from wild species passed through the markets in the city of Brazzaville - approximately 293 of them were chimpanzees.

It's time the U.S. stood up against the cruel practice pushing chimps and other endangered species to the brink of extinction.

Tell Congress to discourage illegal bushmeat trafficking and other destructive activities - like irresponsible logging and mining practices - that contribute to it!

Dear [Decision maker],

I am outraged by the killing of chimpanzees and other imperiled wildlife species for the so-called bushmeat trade - a cruel practice that pushing great apes and other species to the very brink of extinction.

As your constituent, I strongly urge you to support legislation to discourage the bushmeat trade and other destructive activities - like irresponsible logging and mining practices - that contribute to it.

Recent studies in cognitive ethology strongly indicate, in my opinion, that many animal species are not only self-aware but also possess self-consciousness. In effect, this places other animal species on the same level as human species. The question I raise is not if we have the legal right to harm or kill animals, but with good conscience, do we have the moral right to do so. The question is, “do other individual animals besides individual human animals have a right to live?” Personally, I do believe they have a right to live and that it’s up to us humans to learn to coexist with other animals.

I am outraged. How small the people are who actually let this happen. I mean how low can you get? Have we not anything else to do then to try to feel better ourselves than trying to destroy and feel as though somewhat we have conquered something by killing helpless creatures? I am very upset. I had no idea this was going on. What disgusting people. The chimps and other beautiful animals that were killed were killed for nonsense. Think about it. I mean really. What gives us as human beings the right to kill? This world is beautiful. We take it for granted. We are not even worthy to live in the ecstacy that god created for us. And for us to take it in our hands and brutally murder it to nothing is completely mad. This must stop. The world will suffer until this ceases.
