Take the Pure Waste Challenge: Save Energy and Slow Climate Change in 2008!

Target: Hinkle Charitable Foundation
Sponsored by: Solar Electric Light Fund
Saving energy is good for the environment and good for our pocketbooks. But did you also know your energy habits at home can have huge consequences around the world?

One third of the world's people live without electricity and its power to promote health, education, livelihoods, and human dignity. These 1.7 billion people are forced to either use dirty diesel generated power, or live without electricity, lights, irrigation possibilities and connections to the outside world.

Be part of the solution!

Thank you for your interest in renewable energy and global development!

This pledge is now closed. But you can still make a difference! Please click here for more actions.

Dear Mr. Hinkle,

Thank you for your generous donation of time and financial resources to fight global warming worldwide. I pledge to do my part to help in the effort to reduce carbon emissions and slow the effects of global warming worldwide.

By taking the Pure Waste Challenge, I agree to the following:

1.) Replacing just five light bulbs with compact florescent lightbulbs (CFLs) will prevent over three tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. I pledge to change 25 percent of the light bulbs in my house or apartment to CFLs.

2.) Hot-water usage in the average US household is between 15 and 30 percent of a home's overall energy demand. I pledge to learn about and seriously consider converting to a tankless water heater when my current water heater wears out.

3.) Americans waste approximately 3.8 million gallons of gasoline by voluntarily idling their cars. I pledge to reduce the amount of time I idle my car, including before I drive and when I am not moving for a period of time.

Thank you Mr. Hinkle for doing this. I've been a vegan for 20 years now and helping the planet out as much as possible is important. Already do #1, Don't have a car so #3 is taken care of. Live in a co-op so we can't do #2 but if we ever own a house we will.

I'm way ahead of you. I have ALWAYS been conservative and have done more to save than most people. In fact, if you keep your refrigerator door closed when taking food out you can save A LOT of energy! Leaving Refrigerators and Freezer doors open wastes the most energy in your house. Also, if you're building a house you need to put good insulation and that helps a lot too. When you brush your teeth, don't leave the water running, when leaving your house close the door as fast as you can as not to release air conditioning or heat. There's so many things you can do to save energy if you just CARE.

I truly believe that this needs to go forward... we rely too much on oil for fuel, and the result is what is happening in the Iraq. Thank you.

Thanks Hal Hinkel. I have been composting recycling paper, metals and plastics, reusing, working locally and using a lot less energy thanks to a lower thermostat, energy efficient appliances and I am now starting to use LEDs. Lots of insulation too.

I have done all of the above, and bought CFL bulbs for family as Christmas presents. Irrigation and electricity are vital to enable communities to sustain themselves through farming, and we need to do what we can to spread the wealth! Join us!
