Take the Pure Waste Challenge: Save Energy and Slow Climate Change in 2008!

Target: Hinkle Charitable Foundation
Sponsored by: Solar Electric Light Fund
Saving energy is good for the environment and good for our pocketbooks. But did you also know your energy habits at home can have huge consequences around the world?

One third of the world's people live without electricity and its power to promote health, education, livelihoods, and human dignity. These 1.7 billion people are forced to either use dirty diesel generated power, or live without electricity, lights, irrigation possibilities and connections to the outside world.

Be part of the solution!

SELF project: Myeka High School, South Africa
Please join us in pledging to conserve precious natural resources in your own life so that ALL people can enjoy their benefits! Pledge to do all of the following:

1. Change 25 percent of the bulbs in your house or apartment to compact florescent lightbulbs (CFLs). Click here to read the primer.

2.
Learn about the benefits of tankless water heaters and seriously consider converting to a tankless water heater when your current water heater wears out. Click here to read the primer.

3.
Reduce the amount of time your car idles, including before driving and when not moving for a period of time. Click here to read the primer.

Take the Pure Waste Challenge and help reduce global warming in 2008!

Note: The first 440 people who took the Challenge generatated a $100 donation, at no cost to themselves, to Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) by the Hinkle Charitable Foundation! These funds will be used to bring solar power to rural villages in the developing world.

Thank you for your interest in renewable energy and global development!

This pledge is now closed. But you can still make a difference! Please click here for more actions.

Dear Mr. Hinkle,

Thank you for your generous donation of time and financial resources to fight global warming worldwide. I pledge to do my part to help in the effort to reduce carbon emissions and slow the effects of global warming worldwide.

By taking the Pure Waste Challenge, I agree to the following:

1.) Replacing just five light bulbs with compact florescent lightbulbs (CFLs) will prevent over three tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. I pledge to change 25 percent of the light bulbs in my house or apartment to CFLs.

2.) Hot-water usage in the average US household is between 15 and 30 percent of a home's overall energy demand. I pledge to learn about and seriously consider converting to a tankless water heater when my current water heater wears out.

3.) Americans waste approximately 3.8 million gallons of gasoline by voluntarily idling their cars. I pledge to reduce the amount of time I idle my car, including before I drive and when I am not moving for a period of time.

Sincerely,

Thank you Hal. It' the only planet we have, and way too many millions of people have to go wqithout because of our waste of our resources.

Protecting and preserving the planet for future generations should be our number one priority. What will a lot of money or big fancy cars mean if we are all dead? Solar Power has been around for awhile and it baffles me why it is just now gaining so much recognition. Thank you and good luck!

we are changing all of our bulbs gradually over, frive more fuel-efficient cars, reducing our idle time on the cars, trying to keep things turned off.

Already conserve energy. Simple things like turning lights off when not in room, do not run every PC, TV, Stereo....in the house, cuts down greatly on waste. People just to be need more aware.

As our light bulbs burn out, we are switching over (we were already using longer-lasting lower energy bulbs). We are driving smaller 4-cylinder vehicles and have reduced our idle time to early nothing. I even turn the car off if I'm at a long light (the 10-second rule).
# 76:
5:43 am PST, Jan 29, Katie Klein, Virginia
Thank you for helping with this. There is no reason to be wasteful.
# 75:
5:42 am PST, Jan 29, Lisa Thompson, Pennsylvania
It is very simple. So very easy to make small modifications in our lives that result in great impact to our planet. We must now consider waste selfish. Our planet has taken care of us. Now it is time to take care of the planet.
# 74:
5:42 am PST, Jan 29, Harris Thiessen, Canada
We are changing all of our bulbs over gradually. We have dramatically reduced our vehicles idle time and drive small vehicles with 4-cylinder engines. We are trying to turn things off when they aren't being used. Etc.

All communities today should sponser programs that teach and stimulate recycling and economizing. If we as individuals only do OUR part and do work on the other parts, we are not tackling the problem front on.

Alternative energy sources are needed before we use up the ones we use now. Solar energy is one of the best ways to do so.
