Urge Congress to Permanently Protect the Arctic Refuge!

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to caribou, snow fox and millions of migratory birds. It is also the most important onshore denning habitat for America's vanishing polar bears.

But this natural treasure is constantly under siege. Time and time again, the oil industry and their allies in Congress have sought to open this special place to harmful new drilling, threatening all of the wildlife that depend on it for survival.

And now President Bush has called for drilling in the Arctic Refuge by 2010 in his new budget proposal!

We need to permanently protect the Arctic Refuge! Urge your Representative to support the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act (H.R. 39) to permanently protect the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Dear Representative,

As your constituent, I am deeply concerned about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the treasured wildlife that lives there. That's why I strongly urge you to ensure that this national treasure is permanently protected to the full extent of the law by supporting the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act (H.R. 39).

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-MN), would designate the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a wilderness area with permanent protections.

These permanent protections are especially important for America's remaining polar bears. According to a U.S. Geological Survey report, polar bears will likely be extinct in Alaska in as little as 50 years due to rapidly melting sea ice. The Arctic Refuge is one of the most important onshore denning habitats for these magnificent creatures -- and permanent protections will give them a fighting chance at survival.

Please protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and all of the creatures within it. As global warming (both cyclical and man-made) endangers the precious lives there already, further threats do not need to be added. Oil is not more important than countless lives - be they human or not. Thank you so much for your support of the Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act! Sincerely, Shara Searl

Don't even think about drilling for oil in Arctic. There have to be other places to drill where animals won't be killed or hurt. Please think about this long and hard. Thank you Jan Lee

Animal need their space. American people have the wrong habit to think that they are the one that are sitting on god's laps and need to do no concession at all. We sound uneducated, wrong, and rude and we need to have a more frugal life like other population have already accepted to live(not taking china into consideration, they are already auto-destroying anyway). We also need to make people pay more taxes when they have more then 3 children, so they don't end up costing tax-payers so much in food stamps like this Donna.... expecting her 18th child. We need to save the planet and think about what we are and not what we would like to be.

Enough meddling with the environment in order to dig yourselves out of a hole excavated during periods of affluence and hubris borne of ignorance--no one I've heard speak is a prophet from your ranks. Time to listen to babes and sucklings, ladies and gentlemen, because you're not getting it done. We're losing our place in the global market place and you want to continue the status quo?

Heather--I urge you to support this bill. The damage we would do by going after ANWR is not worth any price. There are other ways to solve our oil problem that the National Labs could work out. Please we not only have to solve the problems of today we have to protect your grandchlidren's and mines future.

Bears are dying because of oil drilling, because of global warming (ice melting to quickly)... Please stop the indifference! We should protect nature and not be so oblivious. Enough with greed. Enough with distruction.

Is it not enough that this Government is breaking the backs of all of us Americans with these outrageous gas prices? Now you can't think of anything else to do but destroy the Arctic Wilderness with propossed oil drilling. Why? To what end? That is in no way the answer to the fuel problems in this country....it is just another way to destroy the envirorment yet again. This Wilderness is unique and wonderful. Its needs to be protected and preserved, not destroyed for the purpose of making already wealthy people that much richer. There are some things in this life that are far more important then money....this Wilderness is certainly one of them.

Please PERMANENTALLY PROTECT our Arctic Wildlife refuge from oil drilling. We need to save all of our natural habitats for the animals that live there. We need to be responsible caretakers of our wildlife and their habitats. Our government has been very bad for our wildlife and Refuges in the past years. They are destroying the environment for many species of animals already, and for what reason. To please money greedy businesses and organizations, so they can make more money. Our government are not good caretakers of our environment, either.

Soon, there will be nothing left. People, especially the governing bodies, need to not only consider the present $$$ effect but the future environmental, social and in fact economic impact of such issues.
