Protect the Gray Wolf From the Bush Administration!

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Center for Biological Diversity
In 1945, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service killed the final living wolf in the western United States, on behalf of the livestock industry. Once abundant over much of North America, the Northern Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf nearly vanished into soulful myths and legends.

Nearly three decades later, the Endangered Species Act was signed into U.S. law. Recognized as an integral part of the rugged Rocky Mountains ecosystem, the Gray Wolf was rushed onto the endangered list.  Due to the protections under the Endangered Species Act, the Gray Wolf has been reintroduced successfully in Yellowstone and central Idaho, and has migrated safely from Canada into northwestern Montana.

But the wolf is in danger -- again.

The Bush Administration plans to allow hundreds of gray wolves to be slaughtered on behalf of the livestock industry -- while the Gray Wolf is still listed under the Endangered Species Act! To seal the deal for the livestock industry, the Administration is also seeking to de-list the Gray Wolf entirely, thus removing all protections for this vital being.

The comment period on whether the Gray Wolf should be protected or not closes August 6. Instead of undoing protections for wolves, we should be guarding them more vigilantly than ever before, and continuing to restore them throughout their former range of wide habitats.

Sign this petition to tell the Bush Administration that you want to see gray wolves fully protected under the Endangered Species Act today.

Subject: Opposition to Recent Proposals on the Management of Gray Wolves (RIN 1018-AU53 and RIN 1018-AV39)

Dear Western Gray Wolf Recovery Coordinator:

I am writing in opposition to the two recent proposals by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regarding the management of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies.

I oppose the plans to redefine what are seen as "unacceptable impacts" on elk, deer and other ungulate species (RIN 1018-AV39). The new definition would broaden the term and would open the door for federal predator-control employees to kill wolves for an unacceptably vague and broad range of reasons. This change could eviscerate the Northern Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf population.

I also oppose the proposal that would remove wolves in the Yellowstone area from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (RIN 1018-AU53). Removing them from the endangered species list would result in the slaughter of all but 600 or fewer of the 1,500 wolves in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana using poison, aerial gunning, leg-hold traps and digging up wolf dens and killing pups. The State of Wyoming has appropriated millions of dollars to buy airplanes and other infrastructure necessary for the slaughter of wolves and other predators. Many other animals – including coyotes, bears, badgers, eagles, ravens, magpies, weasels and skunks -- will become incidental victims of poison set out for wolves.

Both of these proposals threaten the future sustainability of the Northern Rocky Mountain Gray Wolf population and the surrounding Rocky Mountain ecosystems.

All species function in an ecosystem and are important to it's existence. Wolves play an important role in their own habitat so please consider before we destroy even more of them.

First we destroy, then we preserve, then we destroy. Where is the intelligence humans are suposed to possess. There is an ecological balance that we continue to toy with, and it is killing us.

If you DON'T know why wolves are important to biological diversity, you should be relieved of your jobs at the USFWS. There are too many years of abusive government practices which has resulted in our native predators being forced to find food that has also been displaced by cattle ranching. We've allowed our federal government to kill our predators on behalf of the livestock industry using your tax dollars. This must stop. BISON -- not cattle -- belong on the North American continent -- the cattle must be removed from our public lands too. They are displacing native predators, which are no threat to bison. Corrupt politicians and powerful cattle lobbyists have succeeded in displacing and or exterminating our native predators so they can run their cattle all over the West -- it's time to right the wrongs and bring back the bison and the wolf and say goodbye cattle, who are ill-suited for our climate.

Quit taking one step forward and 10 backward. US Fish and Wildlife SERVICE...that means you are there to "serve" fish and wildlife...not kill or do harm.

Wolves are beautiful creatures. They don't harm humans or livestock unless their NATURAL food supply is gone. Take a look at Balto one and two. Wolves are the basis for the things in their. They are mystical creatures both in films and in real life.

The Bush regime is pandering to the rednecks in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, by removing federal protection from the wolves.

We.humans, have made mistakes in the past that have destroyed animals and erased them from the earth. Please, don't do this with the wolf. He is an important cog in the wheel of life and environmental balance, that, if eliminated, will cause untold harm. Don't do this again.

They've been persecuted for thousands of years. Now homo sapiens are trying to rid the world of them completely (again). If they keep it up, this time they may succeed. For God's sake leave them alone.

They nearly vanished before they were listed; now that they have begun to make a shakey recovery, we're going to start the process all over again?! People! Do you never learn from the past? USE OTHER METHODS OF LIVESTOCK PROTECTION. They do exist!

Why are wolves important? Because EVERY ONE OF THEM, not JUST all together, BUT EVERY ONE EACH, is smarter than Bush. And you know what? They're smarter than him... EVEN BEFORE THEY ARE BORN. Even in exile, wolves are much smarter than Bush will EVER be. SOMEBODY ELSE FOR PRESIDENT '08!

Wolves are one of the greatest contributors to maintaining an eco-balance. They are beautiful, wild, spirited and family oriented. They are a symbol of wilderness and its significance in a world that has little regard for wild places. Please show more respect for not only the wolves but for the human race by stopping the slaughter of the wolf.

why slaughter wolves? would you like to be slaughtered? they are living breathing creatures just like us. I never knew humans could be so harmful and heartless. It just makes me so sad and im suprised the president or government wont take action. It just dissapoints me so much.

It is only vested interests and a lack of respect for the WHOLE environment that would allow the near extermination of the Gray Wolf!

U.S. Fish and Wildlife employees had better know how important the wolf is to a balanced ecosystem. Otherwise, they need to find a different job. What needs to be done is to stop the caving in of public officials to large, corporate entities so they can make profits for shareholders. The livestock industry is paid by the government for any loss of livestock to wildlife - so what is the problem? Our government (the taxpayer) pays to have animals killed for the livestock industry and pays for losses incurred by the livestock industry due to predators. Why must we, the people, continue to subsidize in this manner the very wealthy livestock industry? We shouldn't. It needs to stop. Leave the wolves alone. Get the livestock industry off of public property.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always loved animals and I have always respected them greatly. Wolves, amoung these animals, are extremely important to biological diversity because they keep the animal food web in balance as well as provide beauty and magnificance to our world. If these amazing creatures are wiped out, we will be losing a crucial part of the animal kingdom. Wolves are like humans in a way. They travel together and protect one another. How would we like it if other people or larger animals killed us just because we believed in something completely different, or because we were trying to protect ourselves and our families from danger? I know that a lot of people, including people in the government, think that wolves are dangerous, but they are not. They are just trying to survive on their own in the wild, just like human beings are. These animals need to be protected before it is too late. I need your help to get lots of people together to inform the Bush Administration that what they are doing is disgraceful and irresponsible. Please help me save these magnificent creatures.

Wolves are top predators - these and similar organisms are critical to sustaining healthy ecosystems. This is information that any freshman biology student should know. Only special interests and the ignorant would be against full protection for wolves.

I am not from your country so I don't know if my sign would have any impact on you. But as a human being I can plead with you not to cull these beautiful animals just for capital gains. By protecting these animals you will be setting an example globally that the Bush administration cares for the environment and it's endangered species and not just the profits to be incurred from cattle barons! Thank you.
