Eliminate the Live Animal Lab at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Target: Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Sponsored by: Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
Johns Hopkins University is the only top-ranked U.S. medical school still practicing cruelty - not compassion - when they claim to be teaching medicine.

As part of the third year surgery rotation, live pigs are anesthetized and cut open to teach surgical procedures. At the end of the class, the pigs are killed and disposed of as waste.

It’s time for Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to stop using cruel and outdated practices – inflicting pain and suffering on defenseless animals – and start using computer simulation and other available teaching alternatives!

Tell Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to eliminate its live animal teaching lab before the start of the next surgery rotation on March 24. Stop teaching cruelty to animals and start teaching compassionate medicine!

Dear Drs. Freischlag and Miller,

I urge you to end the use of live pigs in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine medical student surgery rotation. Johns Hopkins is the only top-ranked U.S. medical school that uses animals for standard student education. Stanford, Columbia, Duke, and the University of Pennsylvania are among the 144 U.S. allopathic and osteopathic medical schools that do not use animals in their medical student curricula.

With the overwhelming acceptance of non-animal tools for surgery education, there is no need for Johns Hopkins to continue this outdated practice. Please end the pig lab before the start of the next surgery rotation on March 24.

Sincerely,
