Take Action to Support Conservation Programs for Farmers

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Environmental Defense
America's farmers, ranchers and forest landowners provide an invaluable service to our country.

They not only produce food and fiber, but they help keep our water clean, our air clean, and our habitats for wildlife safe. The environmental challenges that we are facing cannot be solved unless we reward these landowners who enroll in USDA's voluntary conservation programs.

About 50,000 farmers are rejected every year from these programs due to lack of funds. We need to add $6 billion in new funding to the Farm Bill to help farmers participate in programs that promote conservation.

Tell your Senators to support conservation priorities and make farmland stewardship the centerpiece of the 2007 Farm Bill!

Dear Senator,

I urge you to vote for $6 billion in new conservation funding in the 2007 Farm Bill.

America's farmers, ranchers and forest landowners produce an extraordinary bounty of food and fiber - as well as clean water, clean air and habitat for wildlife. We cannot solve some of our most pressing environmental challenges unless we reward, rather than reject, landowners when they offer to help by enrolling in USDA?s voluntary conservation programs. Currently about 50,000 farmers are rejected every year from these programs due to lack of funds.

Renewal of farm and food policies in the 2007 Farm Bill creates a rare opportunity to compensate these hardworking landowners when they take on the added costs of providing a healthy environment.

The House Farm Bill, passed in July, provided $4.5 billion in conservation funding increases- a step in the right direction. However, it still left many critical conservation programs severely underfunded.

$6 billion in new funding is needed to help meet demand and address some of our most pressing environmental challenges. Shifting some funds from commodity subsidies is one way to pay for these priorities.

Please support these critical conservation priorities and make farmland stewardship the centerpiece of the 2007 Farm Bill when it is voted on by the US Senate.

Thank you.
Sincerely,

Although i'm not a very big fan of meat we should still be friendly to the enviroment. I think that we should be grateful to the very little amount o fenviromental freindly farmers.

Although I'm not for meat produce, farmers that are trying to be environmentally friendly should have the upper most respect.

For too long we have failed to reward the farmers who go the extra mile, make the extra effort, take the long way rather than the short cut. For too long the government has encouraged the rape of the land rather than the consciencious management for present and future viability. It's time we honored those who have done more than they were told to, more than they needed to. It's time we punish the rape and pillage of our planet and reward the responsible stewards.

My grandparents were a farming family with 12 kids. Families like this make up our heartland and also help to ensure our food supply. My grandprents did not use chemicals, and they made sure to take care of their land to endure a safe future and conserve the land for years to come. I am proud to say that I come from a farming family.

Farming shouldn't be a "raping" of the land but farmers working with the land keeping it clean and safe for everyone. Why not reward farmers who make an effort to conserve it will be better for us all and to the seventh generation. Let's leave this world better than what we found it wouldn't our grandchildren be proud AND inspired to do the same.
