Protect Washington From Harmful Mining

Target: Senator Maria Cantwell and Senator Patty Murray
Sponsored by: Pew Campaign for Responsible Mining

Today, a 19th Century law that's still on the books gives the mining of gold, uranium and other "hardrock" minerals priority status on many public lands regardless of its impact on conservation and recreation. It permits mining companies to take precious metals virtually for free.  And, it allows claimholders to purchase public land at the rock bottom price of $5 an acre or less.

Mining is a messy business.  The federal government estimates that hardrock mining has degraded approximately 40% of western watersheds that will cost at least $50 billion to clean up.

Fortunately, lawmakers in Washington DC have finally agree that it’s time to reform this outdated statute so that our forests, parks and other special places in Washington state and throughout the West are protected.  But, it’s important that they hear from you – now.

Please send a message to Senators Cantwell and Murray to save our environment by implementing modernizing antiquated mining practices. Tell them Washington has a stake in mining reform.

Dear Senator Cantwell and Senator Murray:

After more than a century, it's time for hardrock mining to be governed by a new law that protects taxpayers and the environment. Specifically, it's time to:

- End hardrock mining's priority status on many public lands.
- Place national forest roadless areas "off limits" to new mining claims.
- Preserve national parks by placing protective buffers limiting new claims.
- Protect taxpayers by requiring royalty payments for all mining on public lands - current and future.
- Preserve water quality and prevent perpetual pollution.
- Prevent "bad actors" from repeating their performance.

Everyone in Washington has a stake. Please support mining reform that will modernize antiquated mining practices. Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,

We definitely need strict laws on mining. Anything that impacts our environment negatively needs the utmost attention. Our past generations have really hurt our planet and we need to make change and help balance nature once again. Peace www.frankknights.com

Our environment is one of our greatest assets here--for promoting tourism and for attracting and retaining a talented workforce. It makes sense, and it's the right thing to do, to protect Washington state from harmful mining.
