No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

If we have only a ten year window to reverse global warming make sure these plants are safe.Don't put my children and granchildren through any global horror.

Coal is dirty and polluting. There are better options. Invest in solar for our planet and our children to have a future.

No new coal plants we breathe dirty air from them and it,s bad for our health.Let,s focus on wind and solar energy and say good bye to coal power plants.

Because we have lost way too many Coal Miners already! Please save the Coal Miner's lives and prevent the further building of Coal Power Plants? We DO NOT need any more. Please grant this petition in the memory of all the Coal Miners we've already lost? God will bless you for it!

We need drastic improvements the PM 2.5, NO, and SO2 levels in our air RIGHT NOW, as well as long term reductions in CO2 emissions. Not in 2020, not in 2050, not in 2100. We have the technology and need the healthcare cost reductions, yet we are still listening to all those special interest groups.

No matter how the coal lobby tries to disguise it, coal is still dirty and a big polluter when used to generate power. This is not the 19th century and we can do better, and you can do better by pushing alternative methods of generating power that are clean and renewable. But, you know this already. So what is the problem? Why do these petitions keep popping up? Is Congress in some kind of an ethical dilemma regarding the promotion of clean power? Or, is ethics the problem?

GO SOLAR. Coal is not a renewable resource, so I learned in 5TH GRADE! WHen are our leaders going to realize that coal is not going to last forever and instead of building more plants we should be doing something useful?
