No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

Let's get with the program of the 20th century and show the world that we are pioneering solutions instead of being part of the problem.

I grew up around coal fueled railroad trains and remember the constant fine powder of coal dust on the clothes hanging out to dry. Coal is not a clean fuel!

I am a "senior" citizen (Egads, I hate that term!) so I remember very well the mess, stink and black smoke spewing out of the chimney from the furnace! Then, of course, there was that ubiquitous "ash can" next to the garbage receptacles where the residue from the coal had to be dumped. What a mess. And we all used coal then, no-one even heard of "protecting the environment" of course! Much as I would like to blame GW for our planet's current stage of imminent environmental disasters, he's just the only president who never gave a hoot about the planet as long as his Oil Baron buddies got their obscene profits! We have just lost *eight* years of so little being done to solve the energy crisis and other major problems, just because we were captives of a president who really didn't care about our country, the world community, and of course....our own citizens!!

It is infamous for its' ground water contamination !! TB and other once conquered lung diseases could rapidly return to plague those unfortunate to be downwind of Those Vicious and Vile Polluters !! Global Warming is REAL and getting far worse far faster than anyone previously envisioned !! Greedy Energy Conglomerates are creating now uncontrollable Inflationary Spikes and are driving up All Consumer Costs exponentially !! A new Global Great Depression could easily be right around the corner !! It is now a matter of Our Vital Interests to end Our Nation's Dependence on and Addiction to ALL Fossil Fuels !! Congress must bring about The New Tecnologies of The New Century NOW !! Venus - Uninhabitable !! Mars - Uninhabitable !! Shall Earth Be Next ??!!??

STOP coal companies from dirtying up our air! This should NOT be allowed to continue! This should've ended in 1920, WHY are these mining facilities allowed to continue? SHUT it DOWN!
