No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

we have to think solar power and other renewable alternative fuels to generate power, instead of coal using plants.

We should be spending the finite amount of money we have to research and develop clean methods of generating energy--solar, wind, and geothermal. We don't have that much time to stop the global warming that threatens us all--rich and poor.

We are destroying our natural environments and wildlife species at an alarming rate. We must stop our present destructive behaviors and develop lifestyles that are harmonious and protective of all natural environments and wildlife species.

You people who are against coal as a fuel source are bozos. How do you expect to light, cool or heat your homes? What is going to supply industry the needed power to make products and keep you employed? I keep hearing all this "alternative" power sources. Exactly what is this? Can't have coal because of CO2, sulphur and mercury emissions, can't have nuclear because of a possible radiation leak, can't drill in Alaska because a caribou might be harmed, can't have natural gas because of CO2 emissions, can't have windmills because they kill migrating birds, can't drill off our coasts because of fish kills, etc, etc,. You people oppose everything, but yet, bitch when the price of gas goes up, your electric bill keeps climbing, and lose your job because your company can't compete with foreign markets who have cheap supplies of energy. We need more nuke plants, more refineries, and oil exploration because until we develop some other alternative that makes economic sense, those are our energy sources. Get your heads our of your butts people!

The horrific destruction to our lands, to our rivers, to our health by the dirty energy coal industry should be clear by now to all Americans. It is only a lack of honorable representation that keeps this nation under the thumb of oil and coal barons. When will our representative finally free the nation from this heavy load? When will our representatives finally put the nation on a solid path of clean energy growth that will cure the myriad pollution and financial problems of the nation? I hope the time is NOW, especially when the incumbents can be tossed out. And we the voters should be very demanding and use the retribution of the ballot at this time on our representatives.

It's time to stop polluting the air with coal...it's time to get serious about alternative forms of energy that do not pollute our environment

There simply is no such thing as clean coal. We must clean up our planet, not make it worse.

My family moved from Harlen, KY in 1951 to escape the deadly business of mining coal. We must develop green power, solar & wind. The options are available. We need to develop them.

Go live near a coal mine. Tell your kids to play by the power plant. Then consider your vote. And the votes of people who do either of the above scenarios or have the imagination to do so.

Wehave spent billions for war in Iraq! That money could have been spent for alternative energy resources. As long as the Bush administration is allowed to promote coal and oil by COngress nothing will change. The coal lobbyists are more powerful in Washington then those seeking safer and sustainable forms of energy solutions. Until we the people demand better energy solutions nothing will change.

I've seen what coal mines are doing to the Appalachians. You're creating desert where you could be growing forest. Wind Hydro and Solar are the right thing to do and you know it.

It is not worth to pollute our environment and poison us when there is a better alternative, which can rev up our economy and provide a better long term solution for the public. No coal power plants unless you can sequester CO2. It is not in the public's interest.
