No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Tell Congress why you want a moratorium on new coal power plants.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

Please prevent the expansion of an industry that we all know is turning us all into the canaries in the coal mines, and is destroying our precious natural heritage.

There is a dual benefit realizable by this action of change of course: 1) reduced pollution and the resultant deleterious effects of these; 2) the chance to promote the building trades/industry with better projects, while saving jobs...

Coal is simply NOT a viable source of energy for the USA. Besides its effect on global warming and asthma rates in children and the elderly, the mining of coal is a horrible attack on the environment. Mountain top removal, like that used in West Virginia, is destroying rivers, water supplies and whole counties! And we, the people, pay for the damage caused by the greedy owners of "clean coal" tech. Stop the Socialization of big business!! GET these companies off of OUR welfare!!!! ENOUGH!!!

I respectfully urge you to put a moratorium on building any new coal-fired power plants that don't have the capability to trap and store CO2. The CO2 must not be emitted to pollute the air as well as our grownd water systems--and add to global warming. Instead, promote the use of alternative energy that will maintain a clean atmostphere and ground water system. Nothing is worse than breathing and living in a dirty coal atmosphere.

There are too many better options for energy production than burning any form of fossil fuel, especially coal. It's time to stop and find alternative sources.

We do not need to keep stripping the Earth of a non renewable source! Plus coal is increasing the Earth's problems. Find sources that are renewable, sustainable, and Earth friendly!!

"Clean coal" is a demonic lie meaning dirty coal. Subsidize solar.

Kansans have been fighting very hard to keep new coal plants out of our state. Solar engery, wind energy, and a host of other options are available. Just with the technology we have now if divided between all the green energies available could meet our needs, and as we invest in green energy the options will only increase. It's time to save ourselves from our dependence on polluting coal before it's too late.

We need a clean environment for our children. How can we be family oriented when we are poisoning our offspring? They are innocent; we are not. Mercury comes almost solely from coal fired power plants. Mercury damages children's nervous system. Enough said.

Every home should have a windmill in their yard. They supplied electricty for family homes for many years. And everyone complaining about the use of coal polluting our enviroment..... you need to stop using so much electricity! Turn your heat down at night and turn off all breakers before going to work!Even though an appliance etc is turned offit is in stand-by mode which means there is still electric current going to it! You'll cut your electric bill nealry in half and help save the planet!
