No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. We need to move forward and embrace other alternatives.

In addition to protecting the environment, it is important to move the country away from coal and oil dependence, and towards true self-sustainability. The sooner people become comfortable with the idea of working hard towards sustainability, the easier it will be when coal and oil supplies are running even lower than today. This will be a path towards a healthy future for our economy, country, and globe.

The people who run big coal corporations need to take notice that the air they are polluting is also the air that they too must breathe. It's not someone else's problem anymore, we all need to speak out and educate ourselves and our fellow humans about how dire this situation is.

We must send a message to power companies that they must search for and use alternatives to coal rather than targeting poor, rural areas as new sites for coal plants. By allowing construction of new plants, we are undermining all efforts for clean energy and a clean, sustainable environment.

HAVING LIVED IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY FOR FOUR YEARS I AM THOROUGHLY AWARE OF THE AIR POLLUTION CAUSED BY INTENSIVE USE OF COAL FOR INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES AND FOR RESIDENTIAL HEATING. ON COOL OR COLD DAYS IT WAS DIFFICULT TO BREATH INSIDE AND EXTREMELY BAD OUTSIDE. WE HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH AIR POLLUTION NOW WITHOUT ADDING MORE.

Strip mining of coal destroys natural habitats. Burning causes many pollutants such as mercury and acid rain which also affect our soil, wildlife, and even buildings.
