No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

We are actively destroying our planet and all life on it, including our own (rich or poor) at an exponential rate. It is of paramount importance that we turn our lifestyles around and strive to live in harmony with the earth as we once did. It is incumbent upon us to use less energy, live lighter, take only what we need, and treat the earth and all of its inhabitants with respect and equality. may peace be with you

Please use your influence and power to help your constituents - the people of the State of Texas. We need to use solar and wind power. Since gas and coal lobbies are so strong, it will probably take legislation to effect a change. I urge you to turn your attention to this most disastrous issue of global warming.

Solar, solar, solar! In states like mine, Arizona, we could produce enough energy from collection of solar energy to power the entire southwest of the United States. Additionally, solar energy is CLEAN!!!!

Before you built coal power plants why not give incentives to every American house hold that is able to build solar and wind producing energy like a California. Wouldn't this approached cut the CO2 and the acid coming to our soil tremendously, help the home owner's energy bill? Wake up our leaders stop working for the big corporations it is about the time you work for us.

We could have had a working prototype of a "clean" coal plant, but our dear President, in his infinite near-sitedness and allegiance to the oil and coal special interest groups, canceled the funding for it. Now is the time to do what should have been done long ago. To perpetuate coal-fired plants that continue to spew out greenhouse gases is irresponsible in the extreme. Please, please support alternative technologies such as CO2 capturing coal plants.

I've seen first hand what coal mining and power plants will do to communities and the environment surrounding them. It brought tears to my eyes. We are abusing the rights of citizens in this country when there are viable solutions already out there. Other countries are doing it, why arent we? I know that California is ahead of a lot of states in terms of renewable energy implementation, but we need to be doing more. Please make the halting of new coal fired power plants a priority.
