No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

I am extremely concerned about mercury pollution from energy companies using coal. Mercury is a neurotoxin and extremely dangerous to breath causing brain damage.

This would help the US in the long run. Our children and our children's children will be happy knowing that we took the proper steps to ensure their health as well as our own.

Humans are turning the Earth into a waste dump by not using creative ways of preventing polution. We have the technology to do so. Until we as a people of the Earth unite and end the use and creation dirty coal plants, we the people are deliberately choosing to continue building a toxic world. Let us turn NOW to establish tight controls to give the Earth back its power to renew itself as a healthy planet. And we as Americans must be the vanguard to support new forms of safe fuels. Our government must unite in this greater cause to take action against the effects of climate change caused in part by by CO2 escaping from dirty coal plants. Congress must unite to take the steps we all see will support the right action against global warming. I demand Congress stop verbal delaying tactics and unify. Take heed to the message herein. I am watching. So are concerned Americans. We are watching you. What is your will? You have herein this message the will of concerned Americans. Can you feel the powerful outpouring of American concern? Watch this concern grow to regreen the earth and contain CO2 polution. You can make it happen.

The United States as a nation needs to have a forward looking vision when it comes to energy policy. Dirty coal plants are a vestige of the past and cause irrepairable damage to the environment. Let's invest our resources in developing the future's energy sources such as solar power, nuclear fusion, and biofuels.

I do belive that if you have it in your power to change this isue that is vexing our planet, please do so imediatly. I relize things are not as black and white at the top but I urge you to act on my behalf. From a distance I can see the rights and wrongs within this growing problem, and I can tell you that we need to rise up to our own abilitys and start utilizing our talents for sastainability withing the energy fields. help if you can you are our voice.

Why not look further into and support both solar and water energy. Not coal, not corn or other products needed to feed the world's people.

Coal and other fossil fuels pollute way to much! They also do to much damage to the O-zone layer. If we don't act now, it will be a no-zone layer! We need to use other resources. Act now!!!!!!!!

Dear Elected Friends- Please consider a moratorium on building coal-fired power plants! Solar power is a safe eco-friendly and cost effective alternative. After all, I did an elementary school science fair project on it in the late 70's. It is a viable option and many countries have turned to alternative fuels many years ago. Why not take the lead as a the United States of America to make a wide spread difference in the eyes of the world? What a wonderful example we would be to all nations, and to our children. It is in that spirit that I ask you to consider the above mentined request and all the requests outlined in the letter attached. Lets come together and become part of the solution! All do respect - Toni Dodd - Haines

Please look for alternatives to offer us alternatives. We want alternatives and there is $$$ in alternatives to be made as well. Think of alternative ways of producing energy before is too late. Thx

I would much rather see funding put into solar power, wind power and any other alternative non destructive polluting sources of energy than into building more coal fired plants. There has be a better way!
