At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.
More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."
But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.
Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.
We signed the “No New Coal Power Plants!” petition!

I urge you to close the coal plants in this country and around the world. Reduce pollution to bring back clean air and water!

There is no possible way that anyone can say coal power plants are not bad for the quality of the air, not depleting the ozone, or not just hurting the environment greatly in general. It's an obvious fact, and I don't see why everyone is so ignorant all the time. We need to start making the switch to cleaner alternatives like solar power and wind power and hydroelectric power. Anything that doesn't pollute! There are plenty of alternatives, not to mention for cars. But I'm just one person, you can continue to let the oil companies make you richer and ruin the Earth at the same time, our only colony.

We should be following the examples of countries such as the Netherlands and Japan. Put solar panels on EVERY building in the U.S. and then spend NOTHING on domestic energy costs. The sun is the cleanest, longest lasting and environmentally safest source of energy for the entire planet. The back up sources should be wind and geo thermal.

It is time to invest in clean renewable energy. It will not only help the planet but it will help our economy. Americans want to go green it is time the government joined in.

We need to put a stop to pollution for our next generation to be able to live healthy lives...both humans and animals alike.
This seems like a logical step.

Aside from the obvious problem of Greenhouse gases. The electric industry has not explored all alternatives. There are enough small waterways in this country that are perfect for building small hydroelectric plants that can feed into the grid when needed nad will not and do not pollute. These small hydroelectric in most regions can provide as much power as a coal fired plant only when it is needed and can be shut down when it is not. They will be cheaper to build, maintain and operate.

Why can the USA be the leader in health care and global warming. Every new house build should have solar heating. and electric cars be allowed from independent persons. The corporations are getting richer and we are loosing the middle class. The seniors on fix income can't affort the cost of living. Health care should be available to all. Thank you for your support.

I am a survivor of mercury poisoning. Since mercury is a byproduct of coal firing powerplants, the less mercury in the environment, the better.

Why is it taking so long to incorporate solar power on a massive scale? This technology has been around for decades, but we continue to treat it like a neat little novelty. Solar power is limitless, cost nothing besides the equipment, and is CLEAN!

because the percent of fossil feuls we use is simply and uterly outrageous and offensive, when considering how much carbon emmisions they produce and release into the atmosphere, further intensifying the effects of global warming.
