No New Coal Power Plants!

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Care2
At this time last year, former Vice President Al Gore testified in Congress about why we need to stop building any new coal-fired power plant until we have the capability to safely capture and store the CO2.

More recently, the director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, James Hansen, told congress that such a moratorium is "the most critical action for saving the planet at this time."

But even with these recommendations by such high figures, there are still over 110 coal-fired generating plants being built or planned in the United States. But there IS an alternative. Experts say that about 69 percent of U.S. electricity needs could be met by solar power by 2050, and that solar power could be the nation's sole electricity source by 2100.

Tell Congress that a moratorium on coal-fired power plants is needed now in order to halt the effects of climate change.

Dear [member of Congress],

Many of the world's climate and global warming experts, including former Vice President Al Gore and James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Space Institute, have suggested that we put a moratorium on the building of any new coal-fired power plants that do not have the capability to trap and store CO2 in order to take action against the effects of climate change.

I am counting on you to make this happen. This is the best way to cut our global warming pollution and take a critical and necessary international role in the reduction of global warming pollution. Scientists agree that we have the alternatives and technology available to move away from these dirty coal plants. Scientists even say we can get 69 percent of our electricity from solar power by 2050, and 100 percent by 2100.

[Your comment]

It is up to you, and as your constituent, I urge you to make it happen.

Thank you.

WE must go to Coal gasification and co2 recovery if we are going to stop global warming and still produce btu's for our economy. Its doable and the coal co's have the money and it can be done. Hitler did it in WW 2 along long time ago. No more dirty plants so change.

Everyone who lives or work near one knows they are dirty and bad for breathing. Nuclear electric generating plants have a safe, pollution-free record of operating except in Russia. France is a peaceful, all nuclear electric country. Solar generating is now being used in some places.

As a resident of the State of Arkansas I am concerned with the environmental impact a coal-fired power plant would have on Arkansas. I am concerned of the longterm health consequences our communities will face.

It is time to for us to get serious about developing a sustainable future. The serious problems resulting from over-reliance on fossil fuels (coal, oil, etc.) will become overwhelming if we do not immediately change course. Coal has among the highest levels of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution outputs per unit of energy produced. Let's stop expanding coal use!. The resource can be made to last and be used at a rate that will not overwhelm our planet's ability to handle heat, CO2 and airpollution generated by coal plants.

We never should have let President Reagan kill the tax credits for solar projects. Now we have to play catch up.

There is ample evidence to support our grave concerns regarding coal. Please heed the advice of global warming experts.
